I've got the original steering wheel back on, and everything works.   I had to
shorten the brush because the horn button would stay seated.   I did this with
a sharp knife by cutting away at the plastic tube.   I also used a wheel to
shorten the whole thing by removing the solder from one end.   I made a groove
in the wheel hub.   Having done this, I "fiddled" with the horn push until it
"fell" into place.

Thanks to all who gave help.   (The suggested use of epoxy tempted me more
than once, I can tell you.)
