The problem is they also have a stiff rubber backing, so they don't want to bend around the body/frame at the front of the foot well. I might be able to heat and mold them. At the front end of the shaft the 3rd gear #7 is locked on with a recessed collar #6 and a thick snap ring #5 that snaps into a notch in the shaft. The notch is actually in the splines on the end of the shaft and not shown in the diagram. In the past I've never had trouble here even though the snap ring is a tight fit, but now I can't get it to snap into place. The thing is, I can't see any way to gain any more space. The position is fixed at the rear by the split thrust washer #15 which fits into the forward-most groove in the shaft (just to the right of ID #29). All the space between there and the washer #5 is taken up with bearing sleeves #8 and #10 and thrust washers #9 and #13. (Actually my box has the "upgrade" part #11 from the Spitfire 3-rail box in place of #9 and #10, but the effect is the same.) As near as I can figure, the snap ring must be deformed enough to prevent it from dropping into place. So does this sound like a reasonable explanation? I guess I should get new spit washers and a new snap ring anyway. It will mean a $2 order from Spitbits when they have a minimum order of $10. Plus I'll have to way for the mail... I think the, whetever in the transmition is not working. I don't want to take the trans apart, unless it is a simple fix. I think you can't buy the part. Some place I heard or saw someone used an electric speedometer that used a pickup near the end of the driveshaft to sense the revolutions. Does anyone know of this ??? I think you can't buy the part. Whether it is a simple fix depends on what the problem is. One might way that anything you do with the gearbox isn't simple. But it really depends on what the problem is. That the speedometer works at all and is more or less right at 60 suggests it is something inside the speedometer. I don't see how it would work at all if any part of the speedometer drive were broken. That being said, there might be a relatively easy fix (compared to pulling the gearbox out). The speedomoeter is driven by a plastic gear on the output shaft. This turns a worm gear on a shaft held into the rear gearbox extension by a removable socket and into which the cable goes. You might be able to see and even replace some of this if something is broken. Spitbits.com has the plastic output shaft gears for at least the later Spitfire and GT6 boxes. You need to remove the vertical dashboard support, the front carpet section, and the gearbox cover, all a bit of work but not hard. Then you might be able to pull the worm gear holder out by removing the pin bolt that holds it in place (located just above the cable input hole). This might give you enough access to let you see into the hole. With a small light you might be able to see if the gear on the output shaft is broken. If the gear is broken you can probably remove the rear extension from the gearbox without pulling the gearbox out. Mind you, I've never done it with the gearbox in place but I see no reason why you can't. Remove the driveshaft bolts and the nuts which hold the rear engine mount, then jack up the engine with a hydraulic jack and board under the oil pan. Once the driveshaft flange is free you should be able to remove the rear pulley. You should probably remove the shifter from the top too jsut go gain working space. Remove the seven bolts which hold the extension in place. Then with a soft mallet and/or suitable drift you can knock the rear extension off the back of the output shaft. Voila! Assembly is the reverse of dis-assembly. It's, ah, a lot of work. -- Jim Muller jimmuller at rcn.com '80 Spitfire, '70 GT6+ From frede.thomas2 at verizon.net Mon Jan 10 21:30:07 2011 From: frede.thomas2 at verizon.net (frede.thomas2) Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2011 22:30:07 -0600 (CST) Subject: [Spits] speedometer stopped working Message-ID: <14475950.228338.1294720207443.JavaMail.root@vznit170134> /QzfMuT: Permission denied From doug at dougbraun.com Mon Jan 10 22:22:40 2011 From: doug at dougbraun.com (Douglas Braun) Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2011 00:22:40 -0500 Subject: [Spits] speedometer stopped working In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Maybe installing an electic fuel pump would solve the problem. :-) Try disconnecting the cable from the back of the speedometer, and see if the inner cable turns at a speed roughly proportional to your driving speed. If trying to do this while actually driving is too tricky, you could jack up the rear end so the wheels can turn freely. While the car is still, you can also check that the inner cable is not broken into multiple pieces. But it sounds like the problem is in the speedo itself. If the cable were messed up, the speedometer needle would either twitch or bounce erratically, or stay at zero. BTW, how much error are you talking about? Be sure to run a new, heavier gauge charging wire to the solenoid. The stock wire isn't very large, and may not handle the added output of a bigger alternator if the demand is high (dead battery?) I don't remember what gauge I used when I put in the 65 amp Delco, but wire capacity info is easy to find.
