Because we have Comcast internet phone (which is great), we need to use their router. Wifi was OK with a Linksys extender and our previous Comcast/Xfinity Arris TG792G, but last fall Comcast sent a new router and insisted that it had to be installed within a month as the old one would cease to function. Now we have an Arris TG1682G.

Wifi is now poor on both 2.4 and 5 GHz. Out range extender sometimes can’t even connect unless I carry it closer to the gateway, but there’s no place to mount it at that position. The old router had the option of setting wifi power, but this new one gives no access to power settings – can’t even see where it’s set. Internet is fine – 150+ Gbps every time I test, and my home network is all Cat6 and runs at 1 Gbit just fine.

Sure, I could call Comcast and have their service guys come out (probably without charge) and possibly replace the gateway, but they do say that if it works at all they consider it adequate, and that the new gateways have poor wifi, so I’m disinclined to bother with them. Neighbors have spread their wifi over the channels pretty well, and our lots are large, so I’ve got a good chance of getting wifi working well if it’s on reliable hardware.

Sooooo – I want to disable this wifi and buy my own. I’ve Googled and read, but reviews are confusing and I have no idea who’s paid by advertisers to push this one or that one.

So many guys on this list are well-versed in IT – what do you experts recommend for a powerful wifi access point and also one or more range extenders?

Thanks!
Karl
