They have, for the most part, been superseded by solid state 'battery condition testers,' which provide much more information (for instance, internal resistance and state of charge). I have a load tester on the shelf gathering dust, while my condition tester is now my go-to. It doesn't hurt to have both; if the load tester you have still functions I'd keep it and get a condition tester. You pull out the dashpot and insert the tubes and attach the wires so that they point at each other.? Then you can monitor the pistons going up and down.? They will track each other if the carbs are synchronized.? This tool will let you synchronize up to three carbs. I had a set but they went with the TR3 when I sold it. I?ve used the floating ball vacuum device in the past, but will try these next time. It seems like it could be easier. It?s been a long time since I?ve balanced the carbs. They are due for some work as they are relocating (with my wife, myself our TR3 and TR8) from 400 feet to 6,600 feet in the next month or so. We are relocating from Seattle-ish, WA to Park City-ish, Utah. Eric, nice link to learn how to use them!! I had never considered one of the newer types since I had always used to resistance load style. I think I will give one of the Ancel BA101 a try. Miq, I usually don't have a helper, so being able to apply the load by yourself is nice. I have seen batteries that are 12V with no load, but as soon as you hit it with a load it is obvious that there is a weak cell or two.
