here's a new one for me... Hadn't heard my generator exercise lately so tried 
to start it manually...click..ckick
 
pulled the cover off and 
here's what I found... top and side blown  off and of course fluid drained out
 
looks like it exploded... anyone seen this before??   can't 
trouble shoot till I get another battery... what...other than a direct
short would cause this??   what/where/how would you troubleshoot ??

Never had this happen.  Instead of getting a battery & rolling the dice as to whether you have a short in the generator, use the battery in a vehicle with jumper cables & put a headlight in series with it. If the headlight doesn?t light when you connect the leads, you don?t have a short.

I would suspect a faulty voltage regulator causing the battery to be overcharged.

What is it connected to? Diesel motor? Other? Any recent changes to the
systems? Any evidence of damage from environmental, insects or animals?

I am a jinx when it comes to generators and so have participated in the
aftermath of many failures. In the past 20+ years every single time a
client had a power failure the generator system failed to power the
building. In every case the generator was started up monthly...

Guessing here, but perhaps the battery sulfated, the plates touched/shorted
and caused internal short.

If the battery was not vented adequately, vents plugged, etc., it could
have pressurized and exploded.

I use desulfating trickle chargers/battery tenders on all of my lead acid
batteries in hopes to extend the battery life and hopefully to prevent this
scenario.

Again, though, just guessing here.

Was it stored inside or outside?  When was the last time you looked at it 
(was there lots of freezing temps since then?)  Looking at the pics, is it 
possible that something heavy fell on the battery?  I'm not sure (from the 
limited photo) that this was an explosive event.

FWIW, I used to always buy my batteries at Walmart (this is where you got 
this one, right?)  However, a few years ago, I had problem after problem 
with the batteries and the last time, Walmart wouldn't even except the 
shot battery they sold me just about 20 mins before!  The idiots behind 
the counter didn't know how to use their tester, and they say they 
couldn't return the battery without a 'failed' test.  Note, I was helping 
someone with a car that was disabled in a parking lots so I didn't have 
time to take it to my shop and properly test and charge it.

That was the last battery I ever bought from a Walmart.  You (and others 
here) might want to take these photos and my story to hart.  8>)

I don?t know if this is relevant but FWIW, I had this happen 30 years ago with a Mercedes 230sl I owned.  I turned the key to start the car and BOOM!  (I now know what a mafioso?s last thoughts are: ?What the f? was probably all I would have had time to think.)  I may be wrong about this, but I attributed the problem to repeatedly discharging and charging the battery weakening the case, as the car tended to sit a lot and not get driven.  I replaced the battery and never had another problem.

little background... battery is in a 30kw Generac standby generator.  Protected 
from the weather

 It exercised itself last week with no problem..
 
cables and connectors were clean and tight.  It was 2 years and 2 months old...
 
generator is equipt with a trickle charger that keeps battery topped off and 
I've never had a problem with it.  I think it's rated at 1 amp.
 
 
 
took the battery back to Walmart and it was 2 months out of a 2 year warranty 
and they said they would give me a core charge ...nothing else, even though it 
EXPLODED !!
 
I'm gonna wash the generator down with baking soda today. Signs of sprayed battery acid are evident everywhere.  Then do some testing...  
 
I'm 
with dirtbeard...I'm leaning toward internal short as I've seen lots of the 
same thing on the net with Walmart batteries.....more to come

With you 100%. At this point, I?d suggest you look for an AGM battery which will meet the specs (physical and electrical). There is just so much wrong with the old flooded plate technology (as you can see) that the cost differential - which isn?t much - is worth it just for peace of mind.

I agree with the use of AGM's, but there should be a modification to the charging circuit to increase the voltage to utilize the higher voltage benefit of AGM Technology. Not necessary, but advantageous.

With you 100%. At this point, I?d suggest you look for an AGM battery which will meet the specs (physical and electrical). There is just so much wrong with the old flooded plate technology (as you can see) that the cost differential - which isn?t much - is worth it just for peace of mind.

I will politely, partially, disagree on this one. 

If you have a battery maintainer on it (and how could you not?), you might need to buy a new one. Take a look at the specs for the one you have. I?ve used standard Battery Tender branded devices on all the stuff I have that sits (generator, 24/7/365 and motorcycle, during the winter months) for many years, with no issues. 

In terms of charging the battery from the generator while it?s running, you will be just fine.

Good point on the fact that the standby generator will be on battery maintainer nearly all of the time.  We are on the same page.  Using an AGM maintainer will keep that battery at AGM standards.

Hi Mark...the switch is used to actuate the demand regulator 
it's attached too.   It's a micro switch and I guess anything is possible but I 
think unlikely

I have seen this twice in the last 50 years in communications buildings.  The 
above link explains the theory but we never identified the cause.  Our 
assumption was a faulty charger but they were dead when we found the problem 
sometime after the event.  What is the switch on the generator on the right 
side of the picture?  Is it possible it created a spark?

I'm trying to make some space in my garage and decided it is time to 
rehome a hose reel I bought at an auction without knowing how big it was 
until I picked it up.? I thought it was a good wall mountable garage 
type hose reel but it is very large and looks like it would be better 
suited on the back of a propane delivery truck.? Brand new, made by Cox 
Reels. 1125-4-450-ED? Specs at:

Reel is 18" diameter with a 6" core, 25" long.? It has a 12V 53A 
explosion proof motor to reel it in, 1/2" NPT fittings. Overall size is 
roughly 20" x 40" x 20" and is bolted to a 21"x42" board for shipping.

Probably a grand or so to go and buy; I paid about $50.? Come and take 
it or we can discuss arranging shipping. If you are feeling generous 
maybe give me a little one I can actually use, or even my $50. Or not.?

Jeez.? A hose reel with a motor rated at close to 1hp.? I assume it's 
geared also so that guy definitely demands some respect when engaged...
