Instead of getting a battery & rolling the dice as to whether you have a short in the generator, use the battery in a vehicle with jumper cables & put a headlight in series with it. In the past 20+ years every single time a client had a power failure the generator system failed to power the building. If the battery was not vented adequately, vents plugged, etc., it could have pressurized and exploded. I use desulfating trickle chargers/battery tenders on all of my lead acid batteries in hopes to extend the battery life and hopefully to prevent this scenario. Again, though, just guessing here. When was the last time you looked at it (was there lots of freezing temps since then?) Looking at the pics, is it possible that something heavy fell on the battery? I'm not sure (from the limited photo) that this was an explosive event. FWIW, I used to always buy my batteries at Walmart (this is where you got this one, right?) However, a few years ago, I had problem after problem with the batteries and the last time, Walmart wouldn't even except the shot battery they sold me just about 20 mins before! The idiots behind the counter didn't know how to use their tester, and they say they couldn't return the battery without a 'failed' test. Note, I was helping someone with a car that was disabled in a parking lots so I didn't have time to take it to my shop and properly test and charge it. That was the last battery I ever bought from a Walmart. I turned the key to start the car and BOOM! (I now know what a mafioso?s last thoughts are: ?What the f? was probably all I would have had time to think.) I may be wrong about this, but I attributed the problem to repeatedly discharging and charging the battery weakening the case, as the car tended to sit a lot and not get driven. Protected from the weather It exercised itself last week with no problem.. cables and connectors were clean and tight. I think it's rated at 1 amp. took the battery back to Walmart and it was 2 months out of a 2 year warranty and they said they would give me a core charge ...nothing else, even though it EXPLODED !! I'm gonna wash the generator down with baking soda today. Signs of sprayed battery acid are evident everywhere. Then do some testing... If you have a battery maintainer on it (and how could you not?), you might need to buy a new one. Take a look at the specs for the one you have. I?ve used standard Battery Tender branded devices on all the stuff I have that sits (generator, 24/7/365 and motorcycle, during the winter months) for many years, with no issues. In terms of charging the battery from the generator while it?s running, you will be just fine. ?
