[Shop-talk] shortening trailer jack

I've got a typical screw down trailer jack that I want to use for a smaller, shorter project
 
 
I need something to hold up a leaf vacuum when disconnected from the mower and this
jack is too long and ungainly for this little project
 

 
I haven't 
taken it apart yet so looking for some insight.  It 
shouldn't be complicated (shorten outer shaft and inner screw, right)
but don't 
want to render it useless
