From lists at dinospider.com Wed Apr 5 12:23:02 2023 From: lists at dinospider.com (Mike Rambour) Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2023 11:23:02 -0700 Subject: [Shop-talk] paint booth substitute Message-ID: <26306981-755e-4571-bf45-6bf26ba7a02a@dinospider.com> ? Getting to the details on my car restoration and doing lots of painting of parts. The shop always stinks of paint lately and I had a minor health issue where I just didn't feel "right" for a few days after painting some parts. YES I wear a mask, I am gloved but I only wear the mask while spraying and I wonder if the fumes got to me after the spraying but while the paint was still flashing and I was in the shop, this happened to me 2 weekends in a row, guess I am getting old, never bothered me before.? I do need better gloves too, my Nitrile disposable gloves fall apart in when cleaning parts in the parts cleaner and lacquer thinner or acetone when painting and then my bare hands are in the mess, again it never bothered me decades ago, so I need to hunt down some better gloves.? My shop is covered in overspray also which I am very tired of. ?In the past with small parts, I just painted in the shop and for the big projects, I would set up plastic over a PVC frame and spray inside that with a explosion proof exhaust fan, but that is a big pain in the derriere to set up and take down, so I have been looking at inflatable spray booths.? My wife thinks they would work great for me, they are still a pain to put up and take down but far less than the mickey mouse setup I have used in the past.?? Then my wife (love her) suggested building a shed in a corner of the yard.? I can build 100sq.ft. with no permit, so 10x10 or 8x12. My car is small, I can fit the main body tub in that size and walk around to spray no issues, not enough room for main body tub and fenders, etc. but that is fine with me.? I would be painting lots of small parts and front/rear fenders, doors, gas tank all separate from body anyway.? We are willing to spend the $2k +/- $500 as a estimate because once the car is done, we could re-purpose the shed to storage and yard tools, etc. I would build it with intake filters and make a exhaust port for exhaust fan to filter.? Since I paint with a HVLP Turbine system all I need is electricity and good lighting, I have lights I can put in so no cost there and just a heavy extension cord when I want to paint. The advantage would be a clean space dedicated to paint, leaving the parts in there to flash with no fumes in my shop.? The disadvantage would be the distance from the shop (about 30ft away) in the back corner of the yard and that is almost not worth mentioning, except when it rains.? The bigger negative is temperature control, in summer it might get too hot to paint, in winter too cold but I can live around that I think. ?So, what does the shop-talk gallery think ? any other suggestions ? ?Then, if I build this, what is the best way ? Anchor it to the ground with concrete posts ? place it on 4x4 skids ? we don't want to pour a slab for it (need permit if attached to slab) and I am thinking 2x6 floor joists sitting on 3 or 4? 4x4 skids (all pressure treated of course), although we have no plans to move it later when we re-purpose it.? For some idiot reason, if I attach it to a slab we need a permit, if we put posts in concrete at each corner and attach it to that, we don't need a permit.?? But just putting it on skids seems far quicker to build.? We are in So. Calif. so no snow/freezing heaving issues.? Looked at a 10x10 shed kit at Lowes for about $200 less than the material cost alone, that one would be pre-cut and quicker to build but since I want to put filters in back wall and exhaust port in front, I think I am better of building it from scratch.??? My issue with building on skids is critters getting under it but I can stop that with wire mesh.? The goal would be to get this done as quickly as possible, I will likely take a few days off from work and a weekend.?? The Lowes one is based on 24" on center studs which I think is fine for a shed.? The Lowes one is just plywood floor sitting on a ledge about 1" from the ground, so it will sag in the middle and touch the ground. ? I will be doing 16" on center 2x6 for the floor joists and I think 24" on center for the studs. ?The inflatables would be half that costs, they seem to work well, they are noisy and the power must run constantly until the parts are removed after drying, setup seems very easy and quick. Taking them down is more work. ??? mike -- As he stared at her ample bosom, he daydreamed of the dual Skinners Union carburetors in his vintage Singer, highly functional yet pleasingly formed, perched prominently on top of the intake manifold, aching for experienced hands, the small knurled caps of the oil dampeners begging to be inspected and adjusted as described in chapter seven of the Singer shop manual. Fortunately just the front windows on both had the aftermarket tint. We ended up buying a steamer ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C44DM6D?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_asin_title) because we knew we had additional uses, plus we had an Amazon credit that covered the cost. I was going to take the trucks to a local but then we got the steamer. The steamer cost about what a shop quoted me just to remove the old tint on one of the trucks. I decided to use only distilled water in it to minimize mineral deposits in the tank. It was a bit messy, but it worked well. I'd been dealing with the film on the F-150 going bad for some time. A heat gun didn't do well at all, even with a spray bottle. The heat was too difficult to control, while the combination of the gentle heat and the steam from the steamer allowed me to pull the old film off in sheets instead of melted pieces. I did need to use lacquer thinner to clean up some spots where the adhesive stuck to the glass. I used the blue heavy duty paper towels to clean up the residual adhesive. It was a vastly different world Internet-wise (and otherwise) three decades ago. Many things have changed in the world, of course, and many of us who were here three decades ago are no longer here to celebrate the birthday. Sometimes it is easy to look backwards fondly and lament what we may have lost over time, but it also is very important to keep looking forward as that is where our opportunities and future lie. I have been a professor for the last three decades and remember when I had additional phone lines in my house for the modem and fax machines, and that 1,200 baud Hayes modem was the gateway to the Internet. I have students today who have not known a world without a smartphone with pervasive Wi-Fi and cel coverage, do not understand why a house would have a phone (e.g., who would call a house), cannot reliably tell time on analogue clocks, have never seen a car with a third peddle, are befuddled at the sight of a kickstarter on a motorcycle, have never seen a newspaper or a catalogue or understand what a carburettor does, etc. It is a different world here three decades later, but much of it has improved dramatically. Our medecine, our electronics. our connectivity, the efficiency, emissions and power of our cars and motorcycles, etc. It actually is wonderful that we have the option of driving a BEV, if we wish, and at the same time I can still drive my '54 MG TF that has a hand-crank starter hole in the grill or ride my '72 BSA B50SS kickstart, tickle the carburettor, 600cc single cylinder motorcycle. The world has changed dramatically as we have spanned the two centuries together on this list, but it still is a wonderful life, and I would not change it for anything. We have been blessed to be on this journey together... best, doug On Tue, Apr 11, 2023 at 10:49?PM Mark Bradakis wrote: > 32 years ago the team.net domain was created. You have done an outstanding job in helping a ton of people learn more about their various cars by hosting all both the mailing lists and the actual marque specific web pages. Thanks for your dedication and an outstanding job! Doug basically said it all. Thanks from me as a member of several of the mailing lists and the webmaster of the morgan website. Things have changed SO Much, like Doug said. It seems not that long ago when we had FOUR POTS lines at the house, one personal voice, one business voice & two data lines, IIRC. Originally 14.4, ended up at 56K (I think!). We now live on 10 acres about 35 miles NW of Bryan/College Station and after 10 years of struggling with ViaSat and HughesNet, have been on Starlink for just over a year. It's a whole different world! Thanks Again, be Well! 'Everyone?' Presumably, this is a message displayed on your computer? If it's a message displayed on the MFD, if it has a display, then it's an issue internal to the device. I used to be a disciple of HP quality; after all, I worked for HP for over 13 years (and got employee discounts). But, after a series of failures I started buying my printers/MFDs from Canon, and have been happy with the performance, quality and service for a couple decades. HP's once-legendary quality went down the crapper when, 'coincidentally,' Carly Fiorina was given the reins, and the battle-hardened, bureaucratic infighters from Compaq took control. Case in point: Arguably the most popular handheld calculator--at least with financial types--is the HP12C. I've purchased, over the years, 5 or 6 of them but the last couple I bought were all but unusable. The newer ones' keys were so stiff you had to mash them really hard and you'd get unintentional repeats; e.g. you press '0,' and get '00000.' They're now collecting dust and the older models are still serving me well. I think you have to byte[sic] the bullet and put your $250 towards a new printer/MFD (esp. if *you didn't change anything* and the printer started acting-up on its own; communications chips do fail occasionally). Canon's good, but I've heard good things about Epson as well. First... it's only scanner problems all other printer function are fine. This is a Windows 10 desktop. And I have tried both wi-fi and usb connected with same (no) results.. I've tried different cables and different usb ports and different IP addresses. I worked with main frame computers and networks for 25 years (back when they were coal fired ) and I know how to eliminate problems one at a time till you find a solution but this one has me baffled. For one thing the scanning software doesn't give you any error codes or description of problem, other than the cryptic "can not communicate with the scanner" message... I'm thinking maybe a virus or some malware flipped a switch somewhere inside the command stuff that I'm not smart enough to find... I've looked thru installation logs and event viewer and with my limited knowledge I don't see a problem.. that being said, the problem could be a big barn painted red and I'm not smart enough to know what to see. Don't have another pc to attach to and even then if it worked there it wouldn't show me the problem on my box. very frustrating you guys are throwing out all the proper tasks to find this but I've already tried every suggestion before coming here... does anyone have knowledge of internal command files and stuff that could be reloaded or fixed ?? most system files are hard to play with I know... but SOME thing ain't working as it should, right john ----- Original Message ----- From: Ronnie Day To: Richard George Cc: Sent: 4/24/2023 12:33:36 PM Subject: Re: [Shop-talk] scanner help Asking for clarification - Are you having trouble printing or scanning? Seriously, I'd D/L VueScan and see if it'll work. It's free to try. That said, I'd see if there's not a "factory reset" magic key combo to get the scanner bacc to zero. I gave an older H-P flatbed to one of my grandsons some time go, still have the cheap Canon LIDE-20 (I think) I bought 30 years ago at Fry's and a Brother MFC--J875dw that I used to print on DVDs/CDs (remember those!). The Brother is USB/Ethernet/WiFi and works beautifully plugged into the LAN here in my office. Same thing with the Canon, except it's USB. IIRC, I paid around $120 for the Brother at Best Buy. I'd buy another one but Brother quit offering CD/DVD printers a number of years ago, and I can't remember the last time I needed to print on disk anyway! First, it sounds like driver software is corrupted (either from virus or just bad luck.) I guess it is most likely in the TWAIN driver. I'm a die hard Brother fan, BTW and recently bought a HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdw Wireless All-in-One Laser Printer that I couldn't be happier with. What I'm about to say goes against EVERYTHING I believe, In fact, I have to start it by saying I HATE!!!!!!! Smart phones and the apps on them. I believe the ONLY apps that should exist are the ones before an entree. 8>) With that said, there are "photo to PDF" apps that you use your phone to just take a picture of the page and it converts it to a PDF (or other format.) They are often free and really are faster than a scanner. Maybe try that and give up on the scanner for now. Again, I HATE that I suggested that, but I think it will work for you. It?s an old 6-ink photo unit but hasn?t given me much trouble. As for the HP color laser, a friend was required to buy particular HP printer years ago because of the software he was using. Toner was expensive but since he didn?t use color much he figured that replacing the $150 black cartridge wasn?t a deal killer. A few months later it just stopped with no warning that the toner was out. He bought a black cartridge, then noticed that the color cartridges were also needing replacement even though he hadn?t printed any color documents. Turns out his printer used all the toners when printing black & white & that couldn?t be turned off. My point is you might want to watch color toner consumption.
