Tim, I have a Craftsman 2 1/2 ton floor jack. Several years ago it quit lifting. It blew the seals. I found a seal kit on line by searching for the jack model number. The seal kit fits a bunch of jacks. Seems to me I paid about $50 for the seal kit. After I did that, I thought why did it do that? I had bought a dad a new floor jack for Xmas around the same time and it was only $60. But now I haven't seen a floor jack for under $100. So after I finish a few more of the projects on my list, I want to rebuild that floor jack. >Any idea where I can have this done? I have no problem shipping it if it is a good >company. If you don't want to do it yourself look around your area for any hydrolics repair shop. They can probably do it for you. You don't want to pay the shipping cost round trip to send it out for repair. I am pulling (what's left of) my hair out. I bought a 2013 Mazda3 in January after an exhaustive search for a wagon with a stick. With only 55k miles, I justified the hugely inflated price tag. During the test drive I noticed a shake in the front end as well as a pull to the left. Fast forward: The dealer aligned it 3 times, rebalanced wheels twice, and then a local shop checked and said the alignment was in spec. The local shop swapped front tires L-R and the pull completely went away but the shake didn't (shop said rims were bent). Because the shake would come and go as I took long but gently sweeping curves, I figured the tires were both faulty and the faults were going in and out of phase as I traversed the curve. I bought bew tires (Michelin Pilot A/S 4) and the pull came back strongly. Local shop again swapped front tires L-R and the pull is greatly reduced but still there. Shake is gone until 85mph. I find steering pull to be very distracting unless there's a reason for it (road crown etc). On a flat road I need it to not pull. Tire pressures are fine, brakes aren't dragging. Could my car just be super sensitive to imperfect alignments? Could there be a bent suspension item that wouldn't show up in an alignment (the bent rims suggest a few good hits). Is my local shop just too lazy to make adjustments to what might be very generous manufacturer's tolerance numbers? I've attached the alignment printout. I'm ready to ditch this car and buy almost anything else just so it won't pull. It's like an itch on my back I can't scratch. thanks, jim -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Jim, A couple of thoughts: Did you get a Car Fax on the car. It almost sounds like it may have been in and accident and not repaired properly. I believe the Mazda 3 is a front wheel drive car. Has anyone checked the rear wheel bearings? These are usually inexpensive. I know you had the wheels check, but you can check the wheels for true easily. Jack up the car, and make quick and dirty tool to check the wheels, or buy a dial indicator. Make a pointer, make a little stand with a wooden base and vertical stick. Put a pointer on the stick. Then slide the pointer to where it just touches the rim and spin the wheel. Look for a gap to increase/decrease. If the gap is uniform the wheel is fine, go on to the next one. >The local shop swapped front tires L-R and the pull completely went away but the >shake didn't (shop said rims were bent). This could mean that a ball joint is bad, or if the car as an upper A arm or lower control arm, the bushings could be bad causing the shake. >Because the shake would come and go as I took long but gently sweeping >curves, This could indicate a worn bushing and the suspension is moving under loading. It's possible my shop doesn't have a modern enough rack so I just went out and measured the setback, and it's dead on. I checked for cylinder straightness and out of round and found it all to be within tolerance. It was not too expensive to replace the connecting rods and the rings to get back into spec. I also replaced all the bearings and oil seals as well as the PTO clutch (bent the pulley getting it off). Total bill for the parts was just over $500. I probably spent 10 hours or so doing the work. If you can do the work yourself, consider going this route. I don't know what a shop would charge to do this stuff, but I am guessing it would be at least $1500 for the rebuild. At that price it might not make sense. I have only ever had one issue with the hydro's on this mower, and again I was able to do the work myself. But I have also heard that parts for the older units are getting hard to find, especially Peerless units. I have been watching the rise of the electric machines, and have basically decided to try to keep my grasshopper going until there is a good all electric option. This thing is a TANK!!! In fact, it's name is "killdozer!" I got it about 25 years ago and did minimal maintenance to it over the years. About 5 years ago, I decided to upgrade to a motor with electronic ignition. I bought a new Kolher (direct replacement) for about $1200. Then I video'ed the existing motor running before I removed it. I put it on ebay and it sold for about $800. Note, there were no issues with the engine, I was just tired of dealing with the points. New motor in and all is well. I had someone look at the drive wheel pumps a while ago, and they stated they most likely can't be rebuilt. But they are still working, so I'm not too worried about it. Note- this is a mower in the summer and snow plow/snow blower in the winter. Still runs awesome! So, if your mower is built well, and there is a direct replacement engine, I would consider that the best/ most cost effective option. BTW, here is a short video of it with the snow blower (and enclosed cab.) https://youtu.be/Y8WGm5EINjY That thing ROCKS! The main issue is the hydrostatic transmission for the drive. They?ve never give me trouble but I?m wondering how long they generally hold up. I do know they?re expensive to replace. Should I take a gamble on just replacing the engine? Specifically Freightquote.com They will give you a great price quote. Then arrange everything and you'll package will get picked up and delivered, but then you'll get hit with TONS of fees and penalties. (The package was heavier then you stated, it was larger, it wasn't packaged properly, etc.) They will tell you the SHIPPERS are the ones charging the fees so you don't get mad at them. THEY are the ones 'underquoting' the price then charging you more. I ship infrequently at best, and had hit or miss luck with most companies directly. However I found and love UPS freight. I got this tip from a buddy of mine that ships TONS of packages all the time from his business. Call UPS and open a freight account. Be honest with your shipping needs (as long as you plan to ship more in the future.) Then once they open the account, you should be talking to a local rep. Ask them to please discount your price by 40%. They should do it. That is all there is to it! I use them all the time. They are GREAT, reliable and very cost effective. Enjoy! Moose From: "Tim ." The plastic ones get stiff as in the cold, kink easily and eventually crack. Rubber isn't perfect; it can kink if you abuse it and will eventually deteriorate, turning your hands black, but will work for a decade or more and the fittings are usually more robust. Unfortunately, as the plastic ones are so much cheaper--all some people care about--rubber hoses are getting harder to find, but I've bought several Craftsmen brand off Amazon over the years. I shipped a transmission. Built a crate for it and strapped it down. It finally got to the destination with broken mounting bolt holes and no crate. Just the bare transmission with a new label stuck to it. Filed a claim. They came and picked it up. Then in a couple days delivered it back to the destination again. Contacted UPS again so they went back and got it again and shipped it back to me. They claim that they will deliver to a residential address with liftgate service, but, more often than not they will refuse to make the final delivery. Twice now, after I paid for lift gate service, I got a call from UPS saying I had to pick up my shipment at a distribution center. I can understand not wanting to pull in the driveway with a semi or long straight truck, but other shippers I have received form would al least set the load down on the curb or transfer it to my pickup on the street at my home. I'm not sure why UPS even offers liftgate service if they won't actually provide it when the shipment comes in. Bear keeps bending it to the ground and I keep bending it back. Tired of this routine so I plan on making a bear/squirrel proof bird feeder.? I ordered a 7.5'x3" aluminized steel 16 gauge exhaust pipe (required shop content for this post).? I'll dig down about a foot to bedrock.? Cement the pipe to the bedrock and fill the pipe with cement, kinda like a lolly column.? I'm pretty sure this will be strong enough to resist the bear, unless he brings his brother, and thick enough that the squirrels can't climb it. On top of this I plan to make and weld a bid feeder but not sure what thickness of steel to used.? Once complete I'll paint paint auto paint. Any insights?? What gauge/thickness steel should I build the feeder out of to resist the bear? On 3/30/2022 10:00 PM, Jack Brooks wrote: > Stop feeding the birds when the bears come out of hibernation???
