[Shop-talk] Leaking faucet

My $0.02 is replace the entire valve assembly.  Yes, you can replace 
the packing but that can be a hassle, and then you find out that they 
washer is shot.  Although
there isn't a washer in a gate valve.  The valves on for my washer are like
standard outdoor faucet valves.  Don't know how old your house is, 
but the valves
could be that old.  If you can get to where the valve comes off the feed tube,
I'd say replace the valve.

That being said, how is your valve held onto the feed water tube?  If 
it's soldered
this can be a real PIA.  If it's screwed on, then that will make 
replacement a lot
easier.  There is also a newer connector called a Shark Bite:

It is a push on fitting.  Not real tools required.  I've used them on 
my front and
rear exterior faucets when I had to replace them about 8 yrs ago.  No 
problem in
that time.
