[Shop-talk] trying to stabilize hose-end lawn sprinkler

I'm not sure which impulse sprinkler you have but most models that I've 
seen are two-part deals: the impact mechanism screws into the base with 
1/2" or 3/8" pipe threads.  I wound up replacing my base with a homemade 
4-legged PVC contraption that had more stability.  I'd post a picture 
but I ran over it with the snowblower last season.

You can also buy spiked bases that you push into the ground.  My 
neighbors have one of these...I think it has 3 spikes.  Doesn't get much 
more stable than that.

If you're dead-set on keeping your existing base, you can try to add 
weight by filling in the cavities that you mentioned with, say, 
grout/cement or a sand-epoxy mixture if you have some 2-part epoxy on 
hand.  I doubt the cavities are large enough to add much weight, though.
