This doesn't help John's problem now, but one tip that I found which works
really well for mowers, generators and things that sit for a while is to
turn the fuel shut-off off and let them run till they stop before putting
them away.  That way the carb is basically dry of fuel.   I know you can't
do this with everything, but a lot of stuff comes with a fuel shut off
already installed.  I have had real good luck just turning the fuel on and
starting them when needed after storing this way.
