[Shop-talk] Driveway monitors

I am using a Dakota system. I don't know who actually makes this system,
as I have seen at least three brand names on it. It came with a battery
powered passive-IR motion detector, and it also offered an optional
magnetic sensor add on. The nice thing about this system it that the
receiver can be programmed to recognize multiple sensors (up to 4). By the
same token, you can program the same sensor to trigger multiple receivers.
You just "learn" each sensor at each receiver, the way you would a garage
door opener remote. I can't find the exact system I have on the web but
they have come out with a new model that looks like it does everything the
old one did and more.
https://www.dakotaalert.com/store/2500-series-products/ One other feature
to consider, the better systems like this one have relay outputs that allow
you to connect to an existing alarm system or to trigger other types of
devices. This worked great for us because the receiver was not quire loud
enough to hear through the whole house. We used the relay output to
trigger the "back door" chime on our doorbell. So now we get a single
"ding" when the driveway alert is triggered and a "ding-dong" when the
doorbell is pressed.
