I’ve had good luck with this stuff and some pretty rusty fasteners: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Klean-Strip-1-gal-Phosphoric-Prep-and-Etch-GKPA30220/100406369 <http://www.homedepot.com/p/Klean-Strip-1-gal-Phosphoric-Prep-and-Etch-GKPA30220/100406369> Just drop the bolts etc. into an appropriately sized jar of the stuff, let it soak for a while, remove them, rinse them off and they should be good to go. I generally use a magnetic pick-up tool to periodically remove a bolt or two to check on the progress and in some cases I have removed individual bolts as they become rust-free and let the others soak longer.
