[Shop-talk] tankless hot water

If you are doing it yourself, you might want to check with BlueRidgeCompany.com <http://blueridgecompany.com/> I got them from someone here when I was planning my garage/cabana radiant heat system and we went with a Laars combination boiler to supply the radiant heat and on demand hot water. I was especially happy with my decision to go with Blue Ridge when I was installing the system, as they were always available for consultation during the system hook up, something I had never done before. I don’t think I could have successfully done it all on my own without them.

The system has worked very well supplying the hot water, although in full disclosure I should also note that it currently has a small internal leak that hasn’t been fixed yet. However, both Blue Ridge and the manufacturer have been very good at standing behind their products and we are just waiting for their authorized service center - which is more than an hour away - to get out here to fix it.

Laars doesn’t seem to make an electric heater, but Blue Ridge does have electric systems available.

At first I thought the tank was leaking but after clearing the drain - ganged with the AC condensate drain, I believe the AC condensate had backed up into the water heater pan. Well the house if 15 years old and I was thinking abut replacing the HUGE natural gas tank type with tankless. I will check the temp of the incoming water but it isn't unusually cold even in winter - I don't think it has much seasonal variation. Since I have gas, a vent and cold and hot water in the existing position I am thinking I will put the unit in the attic where the tank type currently lives. My brother says the only problem he has is when someone "short cycles" the hot he needs to reset his unit. He has had his for over 6 years so I expect they may have refined the technology a bit. I also think we will quickly develop the habit to not do that as that is the only pro
