The way this bucket smells, I won't open it again. It is gag-a-maggot nasty smelling. Wierd part is that it actually isn't moldy, just rank.

Tim - If you take about an inch off the top of the bucket, the rest may be useful enough for the current job, but you may have issues with it bonding and setting properly. To me it isn't worth it.

I like the setting type compound for most jobs patching jobs since it doesn't shrink. I normally buy the 90 minute kind so I have enough working time. You have to be a pro to need the faster stuff. This stuff is much harder, so you will want to scrape it down when wet so you don't have to sand much. If it starts setting while using it, either jam it is some deep holes or big cracks or toss it.

It is common to use the finishing compound like your bucket for the finish/top coat as you can get it smoother. You can also use the finishing compound to slightly texture the surface to match the surrounding area. Dilute some finishing compound with water then blot it on the patched area with a sponge. After it is dry, you can lightly sand if needed, but if you get it right, you can go straight to primer.

Does this stuff go bad?

Several years ago I bought a bucket of this stuff in anticipation of redoing the drywall in our basement. The bucket didn't get finished. Today I opened it to do small patch in a bathroom. The stuff stinks of rotten garbage so bad I almost horked up my lunch.

I've not run into this before....WTF?

Thanks
