[Shop-talk] Power Tools from Harbor Freight

Glad you are having luck with HF tools. I have a HF a couple miles down the road, but stopped shopping there five years ago or so as I ultimately regretted buying whatever I bought.

Clearly you cannot beat the prices, especially the sale prices, and most of their tools last a good while.

It is just that for the tools I bought from them, it seem like there was always something I had to cobble-up to get them working the way I wanted them to work. I never enjoyed using them, and actually hoped for them to die so that I could justify buying a better quality replacement. I eventually just gave a bunch of them to Goodwill and replaced them with name brand tools.

I also am not a big user of battery powered tools, tending to still use the corded version. My old US-made, corded Milwaukee drills and saws just seem to work forever.

You know the old mantra that "Life is too short to use cheap tools." I actually believe it and I truly enjoy using my US-made Proto, SK , Armstrong, Starrett, etc., tools.

Since Armstrong Tools is being shutdown, I have been buying their tools at tool discounters at good prices: http://www.tooldiscounter.com/catalog/ARM.htm I got some great screwdriver sets, sockets, rails, click torque wrenches, etc.

For non-pneumatic power tools, I suppose since Milwaukee and others now are making their tools in China as well, maybe it does not matter so much for them.

best,

doug

It appears they've conjured up a couple new 'brands' to go with long-time 'favorite' Chicago Electric: 'Bauer' and 'Hercules.' I'm not in the market--well, we're all always potentially 'in the market' amiright?--and my old Makita 9V driver/drill with fresh batteries does all the power stuff I need, but I can't help but be curious. These new brands appear to be higher quality: Hercules > Bauer > Chicago Electric, and I checked them out last time I burned a 20% off coupon and they looked good to me. Has anyone bought any of the Hercules or Bauer tools and put them through the paces? I've had some Chicago Electric stuff--particularly a 4" grinder and a buffer--that have done yeoman's duty for years, if the newer brands approach DeWalt, Milwaukee, Snap-On, etc. quality at significantly less cost those brands could be in trouble and, truth be told, they probably all come from the sa
me Chinese/Taiwanese/Indonesian/Indian factories anyway (maybe not Snap-On). It appears to me HF has upped their game over the last few years and they can't be beat for that esoteric tool you may use once every 3 years. Plus: free flashlights!!!
