Out of curiosity, what specific models have you used that have failed?  
What were the failure modes? Overcharged batteries?

I've had a Battery Minder 12248 for...7-8 years?  Maybe longer. While I 
haven't had much luck using it to rejuvenate old UPS batteries, I 
haven't (so far) noticed any problems using it for shorter durations on 
flooded car batteries.
