Gil,
That is a really nice set up. The compressor I bought has the drain built
in, the hour meter wasn't that much more, and I only added it since I
don't always use the compressor a lot, I like to know when I need oil
changes.
I always leave my compressor on, but I shut the air valve off.
I now have TWO big compressors for sale however!
Sent from my Commodore 64 on a 2400 Baud Modem.

Eric:
I added an electrical box that feeds off of the compressor shut-off
switch. It houses an hour meter, volt meter and strobe. See photos at:
https://gilfuqua.smugmug.com/Other/Air-Compressor-Wiring/i-XT3B685
The system is wired so that the strobe flashes as long as there is power
to the compressor. This reminds me to turn it off at the end of the day.
I once had an airline break at night and my old compressor ran non-stop
for the night. I now turn it off when I leave the shop and the strobe
helps jog my memory to do so.
The hour meter and volt meter was wired so that they only come on while
the compressor motor is running. This gives me an accurate hour reading
and lets me see that proper voltage is getting to the compressor. It also
serves as a reminder to change the oil regularly.
I also plumbed in an automatic drain valve. I have mine set so that it
comes on for 10 seconds every time the compressor cycles. That way, I’m
sure that water is regularly drained from the tank. You can buy similar
controls to the one shown on eBay or an industrial supply house.
Alternatively, you can hook up a short piece of clear hose from the
compressor’s drain with a shut off on the end. The water drains into the
clear hose, providing a visual indicator of condensation and an easy way
to drain it. I had my hose made at a hydraulic shop from material that
could take the compressed air pressure.
