In my job, I often have to make sense of time-based data that spans
days or weeks. The way we do this is to assign each data point a
number based on the day of the year, plus a fraction representing the
elapsed part of the 24-hour day. Three decimal places is enough to
represent minute-by-minute data, and pretty soon you learn to
recognize that 62.25 is an early March day at 6:00 in the morning,
while 185.875 is a good time to see some fireworks.
I don't know if I want to live in that world all the time, though...
