Have you ever walked past one of those things when it was idling in the
heat?  I've walked past them and felt the air temperature around me go up at
least 20 degrees from the heat blowing out of the engine compartment.

I would suggest that possibly, after an hour of idling, you just simply got
the pavement and the surrounding air extra hot and that the fan was just
pulling in extra hot air.  Moving slowly simply provided less hot air and
pavement to allowing the cooling to function better.

Of course, I could be totally wrong too...
