That's pretty much what those instructions do.  Running the fluid low 
isn't really a problem.  It's running the pump dry that is the 
problem.  You can't really control the drain rate, because you are 
using the transmission pump to do that.  So you just turn off the 
engine to allow the filling to catch up.
