[Shop-talk] Welding a full tank

I used a hot air gun, blowing through a metal hose, into a gas tank for two
hours. When I could barely touch the metal on the tank because it was so
hot, I knew that virtually all of the volatiles had boiled off; at least
enough to be sure I was below the Lower Explosive Limit, so I welded away.

I toyed with filling the tank with water, but this was easier and neater.

*When we were forced into a fuel tank welding situation at my tractor
dealership, we'd turn the steam cleaner stream into the inverted tank and go
to lunch! When we'd get back, it would be hot enough to drive off all
residual moisture and be ready for welding with no excitement.*
