I agree completely (assuming Karl meant 'pack' instead of 'back').  

If you want to run the cells flat (which theoretically is good for them),
you have to open the pack and discharge each cell independently.  As I
recall, you're supposed to follow that with a long, slow "equalizing"
charge, something like C/10 for 24 hours.
