Matt,

Take a look at the available tape measures to be sure that the edges of 
the tape is not sharp enough to cut. I use 30' tapes (Stanley, FatMax, 
etc.) and if you are not paying attention when you have the tape rewind 
and your finger is against the edge, you can get a pretty painful cut!

It might be good to release some of the tension on the tape so it will 
retract slower, or just by a junk tape that doesn't retract fast from 
the start!
