I've used showerboard, for exactly the reasons you mention. The final result 
rocks for all the reasons you mention. Installation can be a royal nuisance. You 
can buy plastic strips to go between the sheet edges and the corners, which 
looks more finished. I used contact cement to put it over plywood.

I might be tempted to use screws with large washers in a future version, though 
it won't look nearly as nice.
