Boy does that bring back memories - I grew up with one of those. It was 
my job to clean the suckers. We had a special tub (from Honeywell) for 
the job - I don't remember it being particularly horrible, just 
something of a nuisance.

In our current house, we just have a "normal" paper filter slot. I've 
been buying the 3M Filtrete "micro allergen reduction" or "maximum 
allergen reduction" 1 inch filters. Change every three months.

We don't find that we have to dust very often in winter (when the 
furnace is running). In summer, when the furnace is off and the windows 
are open ... well, it's a different story then.
