[Shop-talk] Garage ventilation?

Hello,
I have a 24x24' garage with sheet-rocked walls and a
high 12-foot sheet-rocked ceiling. The garage doors
are only 6'6" high, so the upper half of the garage
interior is a completely unventilated space. Above
the ceiling is a fairly high attic space. There is no
insulation at all. The garage is attached to the
house, but the garage's attic is separate from the
house attic (the wall between them is insulated).
The garage gets stiflingly hot in the summer, and I
would love to install some sort of ventilation fan.
Would it be legal to install a exhaust fan in the
garage ceiling that ventilated into the attic? Or
would this be against code and/or a carbon monoxide
hazard? Or could I possibly put an exhaust fan near
the top of one side wall, to exhaust directly
outdoors?
(I probably should also put insulation in the ceiling
and improve the mediocre ventilation in the attic
space.)
Thanks,
Doug
