There is a 2 post terminal on the firewall with one wire to the starter and one is not connected to anything. Could the loose wire be a factor? When you let off the mechanical starter the voltage to the coil goes through the resistor on the firewall (maybe 9 or 10 volts). Maybe this is the issue somehow. You can out a jumper from the +batter to the coil to see if it runs that way. If 12 AND you still have a stomp starter, does the device on the top of the starter that the battery cable connects to also have a smaller stud on the passengers side to connect a wire?
