I have had the same problem with shifting 3 on tree. I adjusted the linkage right off the steering box with limited success. Just loosen bolts and move 2 cylinderical bars up or down, then tighten back up.

I also miss the interaction and information so I’ll prime the pump!
 
Here is my 1953 named “Ernie”.  He’s had intensive restoration but I still need some engine work to be done in the spring
 
The biggest problem / mystery is the shift linkage gets jammed up and gets stuck in gear.  I am clueless and can sure use some suggestions.
