Hi all.
Well we had a great 24 Hours of Lemons race at Thunderhill Raceway over the
weekend.
There were 185 teams entered. We started the race in our non BBC car, a 1986
V6 Mustang. We had blown our automatic at Buttonwillow and replaced it with a
5 speed .
Our drivers now consisted of Walter (some little yellow Austin thing), David
(hot rod JH), Michael (black TR4), Alan(a Porsche Turbo) guy and myself
(fantastic red JH). And a support team of Deborah (the wife) as "PIT BOSS",
Mike for technical backup and Eric our newest and only true Crew member.
There were actually 190 teams signed up but Fridays practice and other events
cut the starting field to 166. We started in 120th. After one hour we had
moved up to 100th and then 87th and eventually our best position 42nd. By the
end of the the first day 47th because of a black flag, in this case because of
a trip off track onto the infield.
And we hadn't broken anything.
That night we did a full service and while a few of us were out to dinner,
David added a couple of degrees of camber to the front end.
Next morning off again but only for an hour when Alan came in with brake
problems, a really bad vibration shaking the whole car. We concluded the
rotors were overheating and warping them. If we took it easy, no hard
braking, the problem would diminish but never go away.
Next was Walter and we really couldn't do much to improve our position.
We all pushed the car as hard as we could and the little V6 took all we gave
it.
Oh, please don't get the idea that this isn't real racing. We were pushing
105 MPH, and some cars were doing 120 MPH.
I was given the honor of finishing the race and it was fantastic despite front
end that felt like a pogo stick when braking. We actually measured the
temperature at 650 degrees.
