It starts up almost immediately but it's not firing on all cylinders. It will lope along for a few minutes this way and then I can hear and feel the missing cylinder(s?) start to kick in here and there until it finally all six are firing the way they should and it idles smoothly at 500 RPM. Revs and drives just fine after this initial rough period as well. It does this consistently if it has been sitting a while. I pulled all the plugs, cleaned and re-gapped them thinking perhaps one was fouled. For what it is worth they were all pretty dark. Maybe this is related and maybe not. Any thoughts on what might be going or how I might isolate the problem? Thanks in advance for any thoughts and suggestions. Take the car into a dark area (or at night). When you first fire up the car, spray the finely atomized water around the spark plug wires and the distributor cap. This will show if the wires are discharging via weakness in the shielding as the spark will jump across the water droplets. The "Waterbottle spraying on exhaust manifold" will show non-firing cylinders, but don't do that to a really hot engine, as the sound that cast iron makes when it cracks is quite..... frustrating. But you should be safe if you do it within a minute or two of firing up the engine. All of that being said, my first thought was "Sticky Valves", but as that is actually kind of rare in an engine that actually runs, I'd lean towards the "Head Gasket" folks, but spark plugs are cheap, so replace those and try it, before pulling the head.... -Mitch On Mon, Jul 2, 2012 at 10:51 AM, ANTHONY BARNARD wrote: > Hi Greg, Not overly familiar with your car but it sounds like you are running > too rich at cold start up. Usually within a couple of minutes it is running on all four again. This usually happens in the cold, damp months of the year. The plugs are dark and gas fouled. You can smell it. First of all have you changed/worked on anything in the near past? Timing, carb. adj., etc. If so check what you did first. Is yours an AC, Bristol, or Ford engine?? If you haven't changed anything it just might be letting it sit too long. The compression check might be a good idea. Hope this helps. First of all do a compression check to rule out a leaking cylinder head gasket. Do it cold and hot. I replaced all ignition system on my car and it didn't make any difference. Check the plugs in the morning prior to starting the car; I normally had one of two clean ones and two that were either damp or wet. If I installed clean plugs it fired up immediately on all four cylinders. So I assumed it must be fuel related. I cleaned and aired out the charcoal canister and that seemed to help some. I've adjusted the carbs and am probably running a little lean. When I start the car I usually spin the engine with no choke at first and then just a little choke and then it starts. So far I'm learning to live with it but haven't really found the answer. If you discover the silver bullet let us know. I will let you know how it goes when I get a moment to do some tinkering. Just answering a couple of questions about the set up in my Aceca. It has its original AC engine and triple SU set up. I checked for some identifying number on the carbs and found "1160 L" in raised characters on them. I assume that is a part number but could not say for certain. For reference, the OD of the main body that has the dashpot in the top appears to be around 2.32" and the ID of the air intake bore is 1.25". More to come. But the important thing is always in that order, or you can waste a lot of time accomplishing nothing. On ignition, pulling spark plug wires (carefully, not grounding yourself...make sure you know how to do this) one at a time may indicate which cylinder(s) are not firing. If you "pass" compression and ignition, you might check for a sticky needle and seat on one of your carburetor floats who's bowl may tend to go somewhat "dry" after sitting and then"shake loose" and fill up after the engine starts. You might also check for a slight intake leak that seals itself as the engine warms. If you can work "fast" after the engine first starts, a stethoscope or hose to your ear listening to each carburetor's suction might give you a clue. Although not a common issue, checking your fuel pump pressure cold might also be in order if everything else seems ok. Hope this is helpful, and good luck! And it falls on a Saturday this year! So here is a question. Our regularly scheduled rides would be on July 28th and August 11th. But having the Anniversary ride on the actual day, August 4th , seems special to me. Am I the only one? Here are the options as I see them. OPTION 1: Should we cancel the regularly scheduled rides and have one on Aug. 4th and then again on Aug. 25th ( the regularly scheduled second August ride)? OPTION 2: Or should we keep all the scheduled rides and add the 4th which would make 3 weekends in a row. OPTION 3: Or should we forget about the 4th and have the Anniversary ride on the 11th ( the regularly scheduled first August ride )? Or some other plan that eludes me? Please respond with your preferences and I'll keep track and announce what the plan will be. Please respond by July 22nd if you want your opinion to be heard. Thanks, and what a great ride we had yesterday. 10 cars!!!!! Thank to Charlie for leading us on a unique route to Bodega Bay. This scheduling stuff is tricky. There are lots of NOBBC members who have attended many of Martin's drives and events, so will be at this memorial drive, including Trish and myself. Based on last weekend's cars and coffee, I think this will be well attended, so will draw a number of us away. I vote for Option 3. My second choice would be Option 2 - regular schedule PLUS the anniversary drive. That gives everyone the choice of which drive they want to and are able to attend. Lots of members do only one of the two drives per month, so having an extra drive may pull some from a regular drive to the anniversary drive, but anyone who really wants to do the Anniversary drive will do that instead of the Martin Swig memorial event. I vote for OPTION 1, to go on the Anniversary ride on August 4th. My reasons are self-serving as I guess everyone's are. I am going to one of my best friend's daughter's wedding on Aug 11th. And I never met Martin Swig, although he sure sounds like a heck of a car guy. And I don't drink or eat pizza. And the Anniversary drive is at least 60 miles away from the Marin Century and probably lots of bike folks will be there instead of on Skaggs Spring Road. For those of you who are unfamiliar with our annual Anniversary drive, we meet at the parking lot below the Lake Sonoma Dam and go over Skaggs Spring Road to the Coast and have lunch at Salt Point State Park on Highway One on the coast and then drive back along Highway One. Next week on Saturday August 4th it's the 11th Anniversary of our little Club. We will be doing our annual Anniversary ride which is quite special. The ride meets at the parking lot at the bottom of the Lake Sonoma Dam at 10AM. The quick way to get there is to drive up Highway 101 to Cloverdale ( almost ) and take the Dutcher Creek Road exit and head west. Turn right onto Dry Creek Road and drive up to the Dam. There are 2 parking lots. Let's meet at the one on the South Side of the street. Not the Hatchery one. >From there we will drive over the incredibly scenic Skaggs Springs Road to the coast at Stewarts Point. This is an amazing sports car drive. The sights are breathtaking. At Stewarts Point there is a general store where you can buy sandwiches but I hear they are really slow. So I encourage you to bring a lunch. >From Stewarts Point we head a few miles south to Salt Point State Park where we will have a picnic lunch and go to the scenic overlook where 2 of our founders ashes have been strewn. There are picnic tables there but one never knows how many people will be there so I implore you to bring folding chairs. Also, when going to Salt Point you never know the weather conditions so bring a jacket. So, next Saturday definitely bring a full tank of gas, a chair and a lunch and we'll meet at the Lake Sonoma Dam at 10am. Any questions? Went out to the garage, started the car and pulled into the driveway. I let it warm up for about 5 minutes and then cleaned it up for the drive. Went back in the house and made maps and directions and then back out to get ready to go. Got in the car and just past the gate discovered I had forgot the directions. DUHHHH. Back to the house and Deborah discovers a patch of oil on the driveway that wasn't there before. CRAPPPP. Checked under the car and on top and couldn't see anything, but didn't want to chance it. Put a piece of cardboard under the car and let it run for about 15 minutes. Two drops and not from a location that made any sense at all. Called Walter.
