I came late but enjoyed it. The Delahaye really is a spectacular car among others! When I came by the start of the Drive (unfortunately I could not stay) I found myself parked between the Delahaye and the early black EType, both with their bonnets open showing their power, and rather intimidated. Andy Preston suggested I show him my newly repainted/ rebuilt little 1500cc engine.....I declined to leave the hood open! Hope to be there next year. I wish you'd gotten a few more shots of that TR4A... like under the hood. And on that subject, does anyone know of a local source for a TR4 clutch master cylinder? Moss and TRF are both back-ordered on those. What about an upper radiator hose? While Wendell was having fun with the exotic euro art work, I was judging the pre-war American class. We gave the honors to an immaculate 39 LaSalle. The V12 was so smooth and quiet it was hard to believe that it was running. It's a gorgeous car and lovingly maintained. While I was working the Concours (with the rain and hail for added interest) I had an opportunity to ogle some of the stuff for sale from local dealers. I rather like the Ferrari California so if you're starting your gift list for Christmas.... But the one that has me scratching my head is the Roller. There was a very tasteful, stratospherically priced and imposingly huge Rolls Phantom that they put out on the lawn by the lagoon. They actually allowed the masses to climb into it ... so of course I waited my turn and sat in the driver's seat where I admired the wood, leather and (I'm not kidding here) fluffy wool carpet. What was consternating was the instrumentation.... the thing has the speedo right where you expect, in a very tasteful black on white. But where the rev-counter SHOULD be there's a matching gauge labeled "power reserve." I don't know what the heck that's supposed to mean so of course I asked the sales rep.... who looked every bit the part, was cloyingly 'pleasant' and not even vaguely helpful. He explained that the gauge "helpfully allows the driver to use the remaining power judiciously and with confidence by assuring that he knows that there's plenty left." Huh what? So I asked him how it determines this valuable information. His response: "I'm not an engineer." Okay, I'll buy that but still... shouldn't he have a clue? So I've just spent some google time trying to learn more and have found nothing that explains what the hell that thing does. How does it work? I did learn that at idle the gauge indicates 100% Is this something more useful for autobox cars than a tach? And really, what does this information do for you? But actually, I want to know how it ascertains this critical driving information. Does it examine manifold vacuum and compare it to fuel flow at various rev levels? What the heck? It's all so mysterious. And if it's so dang wonderful why aren't they bragging about it? I considered the possibility that it's a hybrid but given that it has a V12 under the hood, that seems preposterous. Still , the people who fork over that kind of loot probably want to look as though they give a crap about their use of natural resources. I understand Mercedes is about to roll out some sort of hybrid... but I'm willing to bet that they won't be doing that at the upscale end of their line; a Maybach hybrid seems pretty unlikely. As I've thought more about the "how" this thing works and ignoring the utility of it, I recalled something I came across recently. I was poking around on the net and found an accessory you can get for $80 from Garmin that taps the output of the OBD socket and sends it to the screen of your GPS. That just makes us techno geek types all warm and fuzzy. It would seem like a reasonable stance for the marketing department; they'd feel like that's a fair use of that kind of information: to display it, for the brain dead, on an analog gauge. Hmmm... may hafta look into that. Gerry On May 17, 2011, at 11:44 AM, Al Garber wrote: > http://albums.phanfare.com/isolated/zskcgGLp/1/5121858 > > Some photos from Sunday. If you are interested to join a NOBCC paddock trackside and watch the racing, sample the food and wine in the hospitality tent, and stroll around the paddock area talking cars with owners and drivers- this is for you! Last year we had around 20 vehicles trackside and this year we should be able to negotiate a better spot around turn 3 (top of the hill) or at the back of the paddock. the better response we get the better our chance to negotiate.... Once again I am prepared to stand for the tickets and distribute them. I need have your responses with irrevocable commitment to pay me even if you are unable to make it due to circumstances. The deal is: Track admission including Wine Country Pavilion with fine wines and regional cuisine which is a $35/ticket value for $15/ticket if we have at least 15 tickets in our block. If we can get 25 tickets sold the cost comes down to $10/ticket. Canbt beat that with a day of racing from 1920bs flyers to 1980bs Formula One and stock-cars. If you wish you can also spend some extra and have a chauffeured drive in one of the historic cars around the track in aid of charity. Let me know your interest. This year, we have secured a great spot just above the seats between turns 2 and 3. We will have access to lavies, seating between turns 2 & 3, a shuttle stop, short walk to the turn 2 pathway down to the paddock area, and a clear view of the racing in turns 1,2,3, the entry to the carousel, and the straightaway from 7 to 10. We will share our area with the Morgan Club, and the BMW club, and we have invited the MGOC folks, and possibly some CSRG members to join us. To get to our spot, go through the main gate, up and over the hill just past the turn 2 viewing area, and we are on the right, between turns 2 & 3. This is an excellent spot, I was there Friday with the wind blowing pretty good, and there was no dirt flying around that I could see, but bring your polishing cloth just in case. We advise all to get there as early as possible, as this space will fill up. Last year some of us met at my shop in Petaluma to caravan in together, we can do that again if any are interested, (I will be on time with a full tank this time) and anyone from Marin or points south can hook up with us enroute if they wish, we could meet you at 101 & Hwy 37, at the Sonoma Marina, or at the intersection of 37 and 116, just let me know. Make your payment arrangements with Tim, and we will see you all there. If you are interested to join a NOBBC paddock trackside and watch the racing, sample the food and wine in the hospitality tent, and stroll around the paddock area talking cars with owners and drivers- this is for you! Last year we had around 20 vehicles trackside and this year we have negotiated a better spot around turn 3 (top of the hill) . Once again I am prepared to stand for the tickets and distribute them. I need have your responses with irrevocable commitment to pay me even if you are unable to make it due to circumstances. The deal (only for Saturday) is: 1.. Track admission including Wine Country Pavilion with fine wines and regional cuisine which is a $35/ticket value for $15/ticket/person (note this clarification) if we have at least 15 tickets in our block. If we can get 25 tickets sold the cost comes down to $10/ticket. Note: these must be purchased in advance to get the special price] and for only $15 additional per vehicle for corral and laps..... 2.. Our British Cars Clubs corral near turn 3 (top of the hill where tents were last year for NASCAR) and 3.. 3 laps paced tour of the track at the end of Saturdaybs event. [ This will be done in 2 batches to relieve pressure on the caravan of vehicles bunching] Canbt beat that with a day of racing from 1920bs flyers to 1980bs Formula One and stock-cars. If you wish you can also spend some extra and have a chauffeured drive in one of the historic race cars around the track in aid of charity. Let me know your interest. I will need your full name, and mailing address. We may arrange a caravan in to the circuit or I may mail them to you. I assume that anyone who comes on Saturday will join us for the corral and laps. Deadline for me to purchase is May 24- after that you can still come but the price will go up! Also note that anyone who wishes to go to the event on Sunday can also purchase a b clubs specialb ticket for $35/person which is admission, and use of the car corral area, but no laps. The cars ranged from the sad run-down cars needing love to the very expensive exotics that were worth as much as a house. There were four TFs in a row, some very nice old Healeys, beautiful Morgans, many MGs and Morrises and TRs, and a few oddities. Only one Sunbeam Tiger and one TR8 that I saw. The '48 Allard with a flathead V8 was really cool. My friend Tim and his Riley 2.6 were there; he said it is one of two such cars in the US. I photographed a couple of cars with transplanted Japanese engines. I liked the white Bugeye that was factory correct, except with updated 1275 engine. The white Jaguar 3.8 sedan was spectacular. There was not one early B roadster there. The weather was ideal. Mildest I've experienced ever at that car show and I have attended it for several years now. I took some photos and put them on a webpage. I photographed some odd stuff like the cars in the parking lot and the swap meet and some of the stranger cars like the Prius with a Morris body. I did photograph the food vender that was selling Freedom Fries, but I didn't buy any. There were some very nice cars in the parking lot which I cannot understand their owners not paying the fee to show inside the fairgrounds. My Miata was not welcome inside the grounds, and suffered in exile in the parking lot. A rather ungainly Healey kit car and a 356 Speedster replica were also in the parking lot, but some of the other cars in the lot were British and every bit as nice as the ones inside the grounds at the show. I almost bought a piece of sales literature for the 1957 Ford Zodiac, but the seller wanted $20 for it. He said it had special value because it was stamped "Wee Wee Motors of San Francisco." Apparently that adds a big premium to its value, but not for me. I owned a '57 Zodiac when I was in high school. https://picasaweb.google.com/104973305347633073496/Woodland2011?authkey=Gv1sRgCP6B0NTGiejT8gE# From liamof at earthlink.net Mon May 23 08:06:28 2011 From: liamof at earthlink.net (Liam O'Flaherty) Date: Mon, 23 May 2011 07:06:28 -0700 Subject: [Nobbc] British car show - Woodland.2011 In-Reply-To: <20110523053810.ECEA8AE6B6@mail.dsl.napanet.net> References: <20110523053810.ECEA8AE6B6@mail.dsl.napanet.net> Message-ID: <218A0F7B-DB2A-4DE2-87A2-3E75007A9384@earthlink.net> Great Photos on, I was also there and had a great time. The turn out so far for our club car corral is lagging as is the Friday Cravan to Sonoma and BR Cohn on Friday. We saw this last year, with stragglers coming in after all of the deadlines. As much as we want to get as many cars as possible, it is important to get as many commitments as possible, as soon as possible. Getting in after the deadline makes it difficult to get the tickets correct and on time, as they are custom printed for us, not to mention the fact that we get a significant discount on the ticket prices, that are supposed to be offered to residents of the town of Sonoma only, (Not Sonoma County), an offer that we receive because Tim Thresh is a Sonoma resident, and he purchases these tickets on his credit card from and with the blessing of Infineon Raceway. If we want to have a car corral at the Infineon events in the future, then it is important that we show our support for those that make it possible for us to do so. Also, it is important to support the events at Infineon, because all of the events there, big and small generate a tremendous amount of tax revenue that benefits all of Sonoma County. Any of you that do not plan to participate in our car corral, may want to participate in the Friday car caravan out to the BR Cohn winery for wine tasting, car exhibit, BBQ lunch, AND a color photo of you and your baby, all for the price of $50. Bruce Cohn not only owns and runs the winery, he also manages the Doobie Brothers and many other musical groups that we know and love, and he has a number of cars of his own that will be on exibit for our group. Exhibitors, racers, attendees, all pay entrance fees to Infineon, they eat at our restaurants, stay in our hotels, buy our gas, etc. all of which is taxed, and of course, as residents, we get a share of this revenue to fix our streets, support police, fire, and other county funded amenities. Like anything else, if we want to have certain things, we need to pay for them in the form of support of those that make these things available to us. So I urge all of you, come out to the car corral, I can assure you that all will be happy with our new space, all will enjoy the food, wine, beautiful cars on display, racing, and the chance to share the ultimate driving experience in your own vehicle by taking laps on the track, which you will be able to do as part of the club car corral on Saturday, or on Friday as part of the Infineon caravan out to Sonoma. I can't guarantee it, but last year, there was an exhibitor outfit that took pictures of every car in turn 10, and the pics were available for purchase afterward. Tack that on the wall at home, you will be able to beam about it to all of your friends and guests. I did this last year and I got two great professional photos of my car, and they look great. I would attach the photos here, but the club server strips away pics and attachments. Come on people, step up, show up, show your colors and support your club and local businesses, and enjoy a truly unique opportunity and experience. JOHN KENNER 510 231 6803 P 415 806 2457 C 510 231 6805 F -----Original Message----- From: nobbc-bounces at autox.team.net [mailto:nobbc-bounces at autox.team.net] On Behalf Of Mike Gianandrea Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 12:40 PM To: nobbc Subject: [Nobbc] Infineon Car Corral / Caravan Hello All, Apparently, advanced participation to the Infineon events are a little slim this year, in particular the caravan type events. Wanna show your classic Brit car? Message-ID: <4DDE6CEB.9080207@gmail.com> Hello Members, Gwen Kilchherr, wife of member Walter, has asked me to help her with a project, which involves getting together about 6-10 members with nice condition classic British cars that can be used in a small car show in September. Gwen's dressage horse organization is hosting an event at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds on September 17th. There will be wine and beer tastings, food samplings, vendors selling horse apparel, etc., and a horse riding performance which starts at 7pm for 2 hours. Gwen is trying to put together a small display of 6-10 display-quality (but not concours-quality) cars that would be positioned on the grass, in a group in the wine and beer tasting area. Her intent is to provide something that would appeal to those spouses and other attendees who would appreciate a diversion from the horse-related activities, and of course, good condition classic British cars are perfect. The organizers will provide insurance coverage against car damage, signage to help prevent the public from messing with the cars, as well as help with supervision when needed if you want to mosey around the event. If you are interested in participating, Gwen will provide free tickets to the event. I'll be there with one or both of the Elans. If you are interested, please send an email direct to me at gtwincams at gmail.com, so I can keep track of signups and provide further details, or you can email Gwen directly at wkilch at sbcglobal.net. I know it's rather a long time until September, but if you have even an interest, please let me know as soon as you can, so I can figure out whether we'll need to look outside the NOBBC ranks for cars. I recently requested feedback on Iridium spark plugs by NKG from the club. I got no response but decided to take the plunge. I was more than pleasantly surprised. My problem was occasional misfire. That problem seems to be resolved. My surprise was the difference in response, and what feels like a bit more power. Not like a couple of ponies, but like a couple of percent. Probably not, but sure feels better. Car starts more quickly as well. All pluses. I would rate these twice as good as stock, whatever that means So I would recommend these despite the expense. Yep, they are expensive and probably not available for all cars, but check it out anyway. Oh, I also replaced my noisy, and leaky (new) exhaust at our local Johnny Franklins. Upped from 2 inches to 2 1/4. Much better, and again a bit more response, and certainly more quiet. Now for those squealing brakes you guys keep hearing. Any recommendations? Has anybody tried Greenstuff pads? Japanese cars ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.britishcarweek.org/events.html British Car Week is an annual British car driving awareness week for promoting British cars on a world-wide basis. Participants don't need to travel very far for this event, because it takes place in their own community. This is a calling for all owners of classic British cars to get together with other car owners in their own communities and kick tires, tell stories, answer questions, and have a good time. Best of all, you'll have the chance to show your car off to the general public who rarely, or in many cases never have the opportunity to get a real life close up glimpse of these extremely interesting automobiles of days gone by. If you're a British car enthusiast reading this, think about how you originally became interested in your favorite British car. Chances are, you caught a glimpse of one and it quickly swept you off your feet. Later, you somehow managed to aquire one, and from that time on it has provided you with a lifetime of fun and entertainment. If you had not experienced that opportunity, you wouldn't have known about the car, and would not have gotten bitten by the famous British car bug! Since these cars have become very rare on the roads today, it takes a special effort to create awareness for the general public. If you're a British car owner/enthusiast that has what it takes, then WE WANT YOU! British Car Week is all about providing opportunities for potential enthusiasts to become aware of older model British marques, and hopefully generate interest and enthusiasm among the next generation who can enjoy and maintain them for many years to come. If your local car club staff doesn't have anything listed on their calendar during May 31 to June 8 this year, then maybe they need to become aware of British Car Week. Time: Meet at 9:30 for a 10:00 departure Tour: This is the rescheduled date for the MGOC tour that was cancelled in February due to predicted severe weather conditions. The views on the descent of the surrounding countryside and the Pacific Coast are stunning. Our first rest stop will be at the Tides Wharf overlooking Bodega Bay. We will leave the Tides Wharf and continue south on the Pacific Highway and pass through Tomales and continue along the shoreline of Tomales Bay. Our final destination and lunch stop will be at Station House Cafe which is located in the Point Reyes Station in West Marin. We will have a private dining room for our party and will be able to order off the open menu. Japanese cars ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------- http://www.britishcarweek.org/events.html British Car Week is an annual British car driving awareness week for promoting British cars on a world-wide basis. _______________________________________________ Nobbc at autox.team.net Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Suggested annual donation $11.47 Archive: http://www.team.net/archive Forums: http://www.team.net/forums Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/nobbc/fmorris at sidwater.org From jkenner at tamcab.com Tue May 31 18:27:36 2011 From: jkenner at tamcab.com (John Kenner) Date: Tue, 31 May 2011 17:27:36 -0700 Subject: [Nobbc] British Car Week In-Reply-To: <20110531200413.46D86AE689@mail.dsl.napanet.net> References: <20110531200413.46D86AE689@mail.dsl.napanet.net> Message-ID: <000d01cc1ff2$b5dd2ee0$21978ca0$@com> Hey, I drive my British car to work every day! Looks like there is going to be about a half inch of rain on Saturday and about a tenth on Sunday. Any chance we can change to Sunday? Be terrible to have a bunch of convertibles filled with rain, no racing, and no laps. Course there is the food and wine!!!
