Being a very loose group, we are pretty spontaneous with our drives. However, I have also seen greater attendance at our drives that are pre-planned, on better roads, and with destinations where we can socialize a bit more than at the start of the drive, and sit together for lunch. I think that is much of what has made the WCC popular, particularly with some of the drivers of cars that are either (use your own adjectives) - more sedate/valuable/larger/less sporty, etc. It's probably safe to say that an NOBBC drive will be less well organized, more spontaneous, on somewhat rougher roads, at somewhat higher speeds, and with more casual destinations (and at lower cost). That actually appeals to many members. But there are also the pre-planned events such as Dawson's Valentine's Day drive, drives that have ended at John and Julia Kenner's place where we have a wonderful BBQ, even one or two of the drives Trish and I have led in the past, as well as destination drives thanks to the efforts of other members. It would be nicer if people like Betty didn't feel excluded from our group due to drive experiences that are not to their liking, since NOBBC drives really are quite diverse, and there will always be enjoyable events for those looking for a bit more comfort at a bit less speed. So, I have a proposal: Whenever possible, perhaps it would be more helpful to communicate our ideas for drive routes and destinations ahead of each drive, and do a better job of characterizing the road surface/speed/windiness conditions ahead of time, so people can decide whether that particular drive is for them. For example, I agree with Ron that British cars were designed for British roads, but I've spent time in England, and our roads tend to be less well maintained, and have more elevational changes, particularly in Sonoma and Napa Counties. Ask some of the big Jag owners how happy they are about their brakes at the end of some of our steeper routes, for just one example. Let me give it a shot with the route(s) that Ron has tentatively planned for the anniversary drive: The Fisk Mill Cove destination is a rugged, beautiful oceanside picnic destination, with a high bluff (windy, cool) observation area where some people can eat lunch, but with no centralized location for everyone to sit and socialize together. It is a bit of a hillside scramble to the bluff, so not appropriate for everyone, or those in nice shoes or clothes. It's beautiful, but mostly appreciated by those who like outdoor activities. Meeting at Warm Springs Dam means the drive will appeal most to those members in Sonoma County, since it's a bit of a drive to get there, and a longish drive to Fisk Mill Cove and back home. Skaggs Springs Road has some great curves and scenery, but also potholes and blind turns, and steep sections. There are some very fast sections, which is why it appeals to the fast motorbikes and fast cars. King Ridge Road is very narrow, slower, more scenic (if that can be believed), steeper, and longer, but in my opinion, with a slightly better road surface. Neither route is anywhere near as long as the typical REME drives, which last for hours and hours, but it seems most of us with 40-50 year old cars don't want to subject ourselves or the cars to long, grueling drives that new MINIs take in stride (including myself). Nevertheless, it is the anniversary drive, so is intended to be longer, with more striking scenery along the way. Be prepared with a full tank of gas, brakes in good condition, a good spare tire, tools, warm clothes, and a picnic lunch. You might even want to bring a light folding camp chair if there's no room at tables. If this more strenuous drive does not appeal to you, please voice your opinion and ideas for other routes and destinations so the NOBBC can be more inclusive, and not drive people away. I do enjoy driving Froggy, winding roads are okay, both the hubby & MG are 63. Having the TC parked a long time just for oohs is not fun for me. Picnics are fine, stores in route to pick-up food is better. Tables with nearby toilets are essential if I'm going to have a good time. Variety of events is fine, I'll come when interested. Currently we have folks coming from many points of the compass: Sacramento, Fairfield, Santa Rosa and points in between. I am calling this a "Destination Tour". We even have some non-Brit (Porsche and Alpha Romeo aficionado's) interested in participating too. A "meet and mingle"? Maybe you have seen the "Eye on the Bay" KPIX TV segment with Brian Hackney's 1964 MGB cruising around and exploring Lake Berryessa. I am proposing a drive from what ever area you are coming from (I will post some scenic and suggested routes in the near future) and meeting at the Cucina Italiano Restaurant for a leisurely day of viewing cars in the large parking lot, playing bocce ball and having a sumptuous lunch and beverage of your choice at the Spanish Flat Village Center. There is also a historical display of the town of Monticello that was inundated when Lake Berryessa was established behind the Monticello Dam. For those so inclined, there is a small convenience store with the usual snacks and such if you do not want a sit down luncheon. Following the lunch at the Italian restaurant and car talk with sports car enthusiasts from near and far, we can either go back home via several routes or continue on to the Monticello Dam for a view stop (constructed about the same time as many of our cars) then down the hill to a fine "Bay Area Backroads" scenic route called Pleasants Valley Road, ending in the outskirts of Fairfield and Highway 80 at Lagoon Valley. More details to follow. Picnics are fine, stores in route to pick-up food is better. Tables with nearby toilets are essential if I'm going to have a good time. Variety of events is fine, I'll come when interested. Betty Miller -----Original Message----- From: nobbc-bounces at autox.team.net [mailto:nobbc-bounces at autox.team.net] On Behalf Of Greg Tatarian Sent: Monday, August 01, 2011 8:43 AM To: nobbc at autox.team.net Subject: Re: [Nobbc] 10 years old! Folks, I know Betty's sentiments have been stated by others in the past, and it's true - our events are typically pretty much romping drives, often with minimal focus on comfortable destinations or extended social events or restaurant lunches. To be fair, that is not always the case, as we also do make stops at cafes, wineries, and more casual restaurants. Bring a full tank and picnic lunch. This is a remote area and there are no stores. The easiest way to get to the Dam is to go up 101 to the Canyon Road exit in Geyserville. Left on Canyon until the intersection of Dry Creek Rd then right to the Dam. If you have folding chairs bring them as the tables at Fisk Mill Cove are separated. There is a trail to a really nice overlook, a special spot for Nobbc as it is the spot where we scattered Steve's ashes. After lunch we can motor down the coast to Jenner and back from there via River Rd. or continue down Hwy 1, your choice. Skagg Springs is wild and remote, a paved over Deer trail, but it is also quite beautiful and perfect for British sporting iron. See you Saturday! Steve's TR4A... actually, what WAS Steve's TR4A is mostly resurrected and running very sweetly. Tonight she's resting comfortably at Rincon Alignment where Gary is preparing to operate. She's getting new ball joints and probably much of the rest of the front suspension re-worked. Then there's the boots for the U- joints on the rear axles to go on... the originals are badly torn. After nine months of work she now has a new wiring loom... all completely redone and all components functioning. Also the new clutch and gear box are in and a joy to use. Last week she got her voice muted somewhat when Dave Crawford (in Sonoma) redid the exhaust system. She's getting very close to being completely road worthy.... at least to my standards. Yet to accomplish is the new Wizard Cooling radiator, pertronix ignition, and yet more cleaning of the crud off her underside. Then it's on to the cosmetics... she's going to need some treatment for surface rust, some chrome/re-chroming, a replacement windshield, some interior re-do and then, as you might expect with a 45 year old beauty, some nips and tucks. I'm sorry that she'll be unable to attend the festivities on Saturday... but she'll be making one of the runs soon. Gerry On Aug 4, 2011, at 2:14 PM, Ron Engelhardt wrote: > Whoo Hoo! Wanna show your classic Brit car? Message-ID: <4E3FFD48.4080809@gmail.com> Howdy Folks, I'm still trying to help Gwen Kilcherr, Walter's wife, with getting together some nice classic British cars for the horse show and display to be held September 17. Check out my previous post, below. Cheers, Greg Tatarian -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Interested in horses? Wanna show your classic Brit car? Date: Thu, 26 May 2011 08:08:27 -0700 From: Greg Tatarian To: North Bay British Car Club Hello Members, Gwen Kilchherr, wife of member Walter, has asked me to help her with a project, which involves getting together about 6-10 members with nice condition classic British cars that can be used in a small car show in September. Gwen's dressage horse organization is hosting an event at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds on September 17th. There will be wine and beer tastings, food samplings, vendors selling horse apparel, etc., and a horse riding performance which starts at 7pm for 2 hours. Gwen is trying to put together a small display of 6-10 display-quality (but not concours-quality) cars that would be positioned on the grass, in a group in the wine and beer tasting area. Her intent is to provide something that would appeal to those spouses and other attendees who would appreciate a diversion from the horse-related activities, and of course, good condition classic British cars are perfect. The organizers will provide insurance coverage against car damage, signage to help prevent the public from messing with the cars, as well as help with supervision when needed if you want to mosey around the event. If you are interested in participating, Gwen will provide free tickets to the event. I'll be there with one or both of the Elans. If you are interested, please send an email direct to me at gtwincams at gmail.com, so I can keep track of signups and provide further details, or you can email Gwen directly at wkilch at sbcglobal.net. I know it's rather a long time until September, but if you have even an interest, please let me know as soon as you can, so I can figure out whether we'll need to look outside the NOBBC ranks for cars. The MG Owners Club has planned great drives through beautiful Sonoma County backroads, track laps at Infineon Raceway, fine dining, a car show, and awards - all in our own backyard. We'll visit wineries, old town Occidental, and Sears Point. Come gather with MG owners from up and down the West Coast, reconnect with old friends and make some new ones. The registration cut-off date has been extended. However, we can't extend our discounted room rate at the Sheraton much longer. At the end of August, it goes from $115 per night to $180, plus the taxes and fees. Register now! To register for the event, go to www.MGFallFestival.com . To reserve your room at the Sheraton, click the Accommodations link on the MG Fall Festival site and follow the directions there. You cannot get the $115 rate directly from the Sheraton. I hope to see many NoBCCers at our event. I am glad that his last ride with the club was his favorite, our 10th anniversary ride. And from now on it should be known as the Ron Englehardt NOBBC Anniversary Ride. Ron always had a smile on his face, a warm gentle nature to him and never a bad word about others. All the best to his family. Be sure that we will keep his beloved club alive. Yesterday should have been our second ride of August. But of course we did not hear from Ron. We will have a lot to talk about as to how to split up Ron's duties as head of the club. I think our next ride should be next Saturday, September the 3rd. I think Ron would have liked us to go out to Coleman Valley Road and sit on the rock overlooking the Pacific Ocean and decide what to do next. I will be honored to lead this ride and will meet you all at Bad Ass Coffee at 10am. Neither Trish nor I have ever met Candy, but we hope to do so soon, to express our grief, offer whatever comfort we can, and let her and her family know just how important Ron has been to our little band of British car lovers. Ron often referred to Steve Lehman as the leader of the NOBBC, but never having met Steve, I always saw Ron in that role, and it was a role he filled graciously, with enthusiasm, dedication, and joy. Always quick with a smile, handshake and clap on the back, was Ron. In the 7 years I have known Ron, I always enjoyed our discussions, from cars to bikes, to some of his Vietnam experiences, to computers and current events. Ron has been our organizer, ride leader and friend, fellow British car lover, quiet and calm. The NOBBC meant so much to him, and his dedication to Steve after his passing showed a great deal of loyalty to his friend who had started this group 10 years ago. Now, those of us who have enjoyed the camaraderie of the club that Ron so loved, are here to carry on, though as John Kenner said in his email, it may take a few of us to do his job. First of all my heartfelt condolences to Ron's wife, Candy and his family; there is little that one can say to ease this very sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Ron was the heart and soul of the NoBBC and always had a cheerful smile on his face whenever he saw you. We have a great group of friends with different skills, backgrounds, and a good assortment of cars, this is a group that we might not have had if not for Ron and his friend Steve. I would hope that the club will go forward without Ron, but certainly in his memory. I will see you all Saturday at Bad Ass 10 AM. Continuing with the organizational tasks should be pretty easy; notify members of drives and events, moderate the mailing list, coordinate with Tcherek for the web site (which needs updating and a memorial for Ron), and maintaining the membership list. Unless and until anyone objects or wants to take on all or part of those responsibilities, I will be in touch with Candy, as well as Mark Bradakis, the AutoX list owner to obtain the necessary password to take over the moderator duties and get access to the membership list. I'll also get in touch with Tcherek regarding the website. Since we get busy with work during the summer months, we don't make all of the drives, so while I am willing to notify members of the upcoming drives, it would be great if one or two other people can put themselves in the position of coordinating with the others so that at least one person is always available to take the leadership position on each drive. John Kenner and I have worked together on many NOBBC and GGLC drives and BBQs as well as some of my tech sessions, so I'm going to ask him now if he'll agree to do this (I think the answer is yes), so how about one or two more volunteers? Ron was such a great guy, and an enthusiastic, positive leader for the club who everyone admired. Although I have not been active in the club since moving out of state years ago, I periodically stayed in touch with Ron. I am deeply saddened by his passing. I joined NOBBC back when founders Steve, Ron, Mike and Dean gathered under the revolving Coddingtown sign for rides once or twice per month. A move to MN then took me away from the NOBBC and Sonoma Counties wonderful back roads for several years. I am now back in Santa Rosa, albeit my '65 Morris Cooper S is not yet road worthy until I can find time to put it back together after a drawn-out freshen up, including engine and gearbox rebuild. Ron checked in every once in a while to ask when I was going to show up for a ride, but the pressures of a career and young family kept me out of the garage. This is now much more of a disappointment than I could have imagined had I known that a club ride with Ron leading the way in his MGA would have to reside in my memories only. I wouldn't want to miss Ron's anniversary ride, so I will be watching this space with interest, selfishly hoping that his Birthday isn't in the next few weeks. If it is, I might ask to ride along with someone, but I'd rather use it as a motivator to get out in to the garage and finish my car. Ron's been ribbing me to get it running for a while, and I can't think of a better way to personally honor his memory. I truly grieve for his family and for the rest of us. And, I'm certain that we will miss his presence in our lives every time we roll out through the back roads of the North Coast. Two new deaths in my own extended family in the last several months and a very hectic social schedule with extended visits from three nieces, along with other local events. It meant that Pia and I were missing from NOBBCs rides far too often, I know. MIKE FROST, RON ENGELHARDT , STEVE LEHMANN, and DEAN PAIGE Two founding members of NOBBC are now deceased. Mike got busy building a family, a worthy endeavor. As the only participating remaining founding member with fair following winds I hope to be attending our rides as often as possible. Hope to see you on Saturday at Bad Ass. The only time I know he has sent something out is when I see it in someone's reply. Since you are to be in charge of the list and email forum, can check to see what is up the server? I miss far too many rides for too many reasons, I don't want to miss them all. He was a good friend. Lets face it, he was the club. His smile and personality was genuine. He constantly reminded us that the only rule in the club was that there were no rules. His attitude was refreshing. When I joined a few years back he was very happy to see another mga out there. We constantly talked about all the mechanical issues we had with our cars and the simple fixes to make them go again. I haven't been active lately since my engine is in the midst of a rebuild suffering from insufficient funding. I will see you all at bad ass this saturday but I will be driving my dodge truck instead of my mga. This saturday may be our biggest ride ever. Another issue to deal with will be the NOBBC web site since Ron's email is currently the contact email to join. He will be missed . I have not been on enough drives or at enough events to have fully appreciated his contributions, but it is clear to me that he will me that he will be greatly missed. Unfortunately the drive on Saturday conflicts with the annual Hog Island Race out of Inverness Yacht Club up Tomales Bay, but if you drive that section of Route One in the afternoon you may see us. Liam, In the spirit of keeping a strong MGA presence on the club drive, would you like to take "Mahitabel" out? I am confident that if she displays any unexpected foibles you will know how to get her home. (Actually she is running very strong since the new valve job, though, of course displaying the great British talent of dripping oil......and don't forget she has drum brakes!)
