She is going to send photos, but it looks like it will be difficult to be part of this sale since it is happening in Colorado. She is going to send me photos today. She said she has two people that are going to be seeing the car Saturday so it would seem any offer would have to be made sight unseen other than the photos. Do you or anybody else have any first hand knowledge of the condition and perhaps an evaluation. $10-12K seems like a really good deal, but condition is everything. After the paperwork was done we toasted the deal with some of Dee's home brew (rootbeer) and I set out on the adventure. Yes... some might say having a mistress 22 years younger is of questionable taste. Still, she's hot looking, even at her age. It's fun enticing my new girlfriend to come home with me. She's more delicate than I remember but still strong. I headed out from Dee's place to go up into the Rockies to visit one of the Land Rover Brethren in Baily, Colorado. This took far longer than anticipated and the darkness monsters began threatening us. Seems that she's a bit bashful and doesn't want to offend the darkness by having any lights. Well....we do have brake lights and that's a very good thing since people around here seem to want to follow far too close. We got as far as Westminster and I looked for some housing that might offer a roof for both of us. Well the Westin hotel there was plenty pretentious enough for a tryst with one's latest love but we had to pay dearly for it. It did rain a drab during the night and she stayed dry. She also apparently garnered enough attention that the parking valet looked up TRs on the net so he could explain it to people asking about her. (incidentally no parking varlet was allowed to actually touch her) This morning the wake-up was tough. She wanted to sleep in but I choked her severely until she came to life. In spite of that brutality once on the road we went well and got to the Land Rover friend's place in time to mooch an early brunch. His children ooooo- ed and ahhhhhh-ed at the pretty red charmer. Then we headed south on US 285 and West on US 160. We crossed three 10K passes today and she was a good sport about it. Although she did make it clear that she'd prefer a little more oxygen to breathe. And then there were those little rain bursts we passed through... muddied up the exterior somewhat but the interior only got a few drops. Maybe I'll have to put up the top tomorrow. Tonight we're in Pagosa Springs, CO.... about an hour and something East of Durango. The plan from here is to try to avoid the rain but that's looking rather difficult. Nevertheless, in the morning, it's off to Durango and then down past Mesa Verde, to Four Corners, across a piece of the Navajo Reservation and ending up in Flagstaff at the home of another of the Land Rover afflicted. We are going to have a serious look at the lights and wipers to see if we can't get them to work.... heck maybe the horn will get some attention too. Until she's got working lights I'm imposing a sundown curfew. Here's a link to a couple photos from today: http://picasaweb.google.com/MewGull9/TR4A One image was on the road to Bailey about noon and the other was shot a little after six this evening at an overlook on the west side of Wolf Creek Pass.... on the way into Pagosa Springs. No buddy wants to mess with it, said they don't have the right jig or parts for the press to support it properly. Does anyone know of someone in the area who is not afraid to do the work. I would appreciate a call or e-mail. thanks for your help. I'll be there though I may skip Adels. One thing though, this weekend is Levi's Grand Fondo which goes through Occidental. We may be sharing the road with thousands of bicycles. Just looked it up, all three of the routes go through Occidental and roads between Occidental and SR so perhaps a route revision is in order. I just rebuilt the engine for my spitfire. I have been told to use a racing oil with zinc. DO NOT use a zinc additive with modern detergent oils. It will gum up the detergent in the oil and render the cleaning properties of the detergent useless. The result will be contaminated oil, a clogged filter, and excessive wear on the cam and bearings. The racing oils with zinc are specially formulated to work with our flat tappet cams. Just my 2 cents. My Morgan has the same engine as your TR. I have been using Chevron Delo for diesel engines with zddp (zinc phosphate), either multi grade or single grade since the oil companies removed zddp to please the big three without warning so catalytic converters in new cars would live longer. I also use.... Are you ready? STP that has zddp in it. Flat tappet engines should be using something with this additive and with EVERY OIL CHANGE. Never mind what they tell you about just for break-in mileage only. OR you can replace the cam and tappets along with the bearings, oil pump, etc. as you will start getting metal flakes in the oil and that gets pumped everywhere. The TR engine should rev. to 6000 without problems with stock rods. Beyond that you need Carillo or some other racing rods and unless the engine has been really tweeked to make power above 6000 you should be fine. Speaking of being fine, it seems we have an incomplete sentence (see red type below). Hope this helps. Cheers, Wendell On Oct 11, 2010, at 4:13 PM, G. Steve always kept that car in top condition so no surprise that the trip was uneventful mechanically. I'll be acquiring some Delo since that seems like an obvious choice for those also have some diesels in the fleet. I did some checking around today and I find that the parts stores in this area have a variety of alternatives (I mean Smothers and Santa Rosa Auto Parts, not Kragen, etc) but they charge dearly for it. While I would not like to scrimp where my new love's health and welfare are concerned, I think spending more than $10 per quarts seems excessive. Wendell, The missing piece of that sentence was that she seems to have low oil level after resting for more than a few minutes. I must have been using a Lucas keyboard. I put the volt meter on her last night and there was no obvious drop in voltage by morning and I didn't see any puddle of electricks underneath her this morning either so I'm taking that as a good sign that she's not leaking electrics and that the smoke is still mostly in the wires. She probably won't make any Saturday rides for a while.... not until I get some of the issues taken care of.... Steve took off the crank driven fan and installed an electric. It's not thermostatically controlled however and I find that I obsess about the temp gauge, especially in traffic. I suspect that the radiator needs boiling out, at a minimum. So that's the first order of business. The throttle linkage is a bit mucked up. Still have no wipers. The clutch needs attention and I have to find the source of those bangs, groans, and creaks under acceleration. Oil Pressure gauge is dead. And so on. So she's on a very short leash until all that is sorted out to my comfort level. Now... does anyone know where to find a new or refurbished Union ignition locks. This one is pretty used and loose.... it took me a while to learn the combination: push the key in, turn about 5 degrees clockwise, pull gently and slowly turn clockwise until starter engages. None of the keys seem to work in the doors and the trunk locks or not at its option. No flag in the boot but there is a single black calif license plate. I'm hoping that Dee can find the other one.... or the original registration. That will allow me to keep the proper plates. I'm also having a bit of hassle folding up the top.... there is no doubt that I'm doing it wrong but I can't tell how. When the top is lowered into the bin behind the seats the two conical pins that mate with the ports on the windshield frame point straight up. They are higher than the surrounding bodywork and so, when the tonneau is pulled taut, I risk punching holes in it. I need lessons in top stowage. Might be a defective gauge. The TR engine should hold 70 psi @ 3000 rpm when warm. Truth is it will fall off a little. The TR-4 range also has a voltage stabilizer for the dash board electric items and that might be the culprit for the varying oil pressure readings. As for the ignition issue, Moss Motors has the entire Ig. Switch assembly with keys for $25.95 + shipping and tax. Their part # 542-070. It sounds to me like whatever Steve installed is not something Standard-Triumph would recognize. I might be wrong but both of the TR-4's I owned had a simple twist the key to the right until it stops, twist a little further and the starter motor would activate then let it go back to the first stop. It would either start or you would need to crank some more.... And no I don't work for Moss Motors. As for the top, some of the TR-4 range had a roadster top or a convertible top. The cars I owned had the roadster top. So I may be in ignorance of how the other one works. The roadster top is pretty straight forward but if you wait until it starts raining to put it up, you're going to get wet. Hope this helps. Wendell On Oct 12, 2010, at 5:24 PM, G. I just replaced all the oils (and filter) after leaving everything to drain for an hour (level). I drove the car 4 miles to get everything warm. The handbook says that the engine takes 9.5 US pints. Mine took only 8.5 US pints. The handbook says the rear axle takes 3.25 US pints. Mine took only 2 pints to the filler plug hole. I didn't measure how much it took. I don't see any problem if you filled it to the bottom of the filler hole. Your oil pressure seems good. I know you have the canister type which seems to hold at least a pint itself. Try running it and then check the oil level again and it may need another quart. my dipstick hits the bottom also. Also my mga workshop manual says 9 us pints not 9.5 pints The rear end is puzzeling. I figure the car was level when you filled it. The oil should fill up the diff in the middle and run down each length of axle tube to the hub bearings. Also, my mga manual says it takes 2.7 US pints (General Data page 6, Capacities) not 3.25 US pints as you stated. Maybe run it and check the level again. Maybe there is some air trapped inside. Are you using the MGA Workshop manual? or another publication. I purchased mine in 1980 but maybe they changed some of the stuff in it in the recent editions? My mga is down due to losing a chunk of my #2 exhaust valve. I am having JNW Engine and Machine in Santa Rosa work on my back up head (1622). Hopefully I will be on the road again soon. This is a detail shot from the James Bond Aston Martin that just sold at auction. The indicator lights look an awful lot like those on Series Land Rovers and various other contemporary Brit cars. Maybe I should check and make sure I didn't get the guns. http://www.autoblog.com/photos/james-bonds-aston-martin-db5/#3514751 I needed that option on 101 yesterday when someone cut me off and slammed on the brakes to get to an exit as I nearly rear-ended them. Of course, the Land Rover really did have a twin 50 cal option, but I suspect US customs and/or ATF might have put up a fuss about that. Still, the mounting hardware was listed in the optional hardware catalogue. It's fun to look at all the other photos of it too. G.
