The 1949 MG TC was certainly not built with the idea that it would be still running many decades later. It is for this reason, for instance, that modern skyscrapers, tunnels and freeways are not made of wood. Nonetheless, the TC was certainly built to a purpose - to get a person from one place to another as uncomfortably as humanly possible has been suggested as the motive. Ron 58 MGA From nobbc at sonic.net Thu Apr 1 17:10:54 2010 From: nobbc at sonic.net (Ron Engelhardt) Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 17:10:54 -0700 Subject: [Nobbc] [Mgs] Fools and Funding Message-ID: <4BB5360E.3080902@sonic.net> As long as I'm in the forwarding mode, this came from Mark Bradakis owner of team.net and host to our Nobbc mail list via the MGs list. Mark puts out a yearly appeal on the major marque lists but doesn't seem to send anything to our puny list so I'm resending it to you all. If you care to donate, mention our Nobbc list as well as any others you are on. There are significant expenses to hosting these lists and where would we be without the lists? Thanks, Ron 58 MGA Marks message: No, this is not a political rant about the scoundrels on Capitol Hill. I'll rant about that elsewhere, probably the prattle forum on the Team.Net forums. For the moment, though, consider this my annual State of Team.Net speech. It is getting sent out on All Fool's Day. More on that in a bit. Back in April of 1991 the domain team.net was registered. We are 19 years old this month. Of course there were a few years before then that email was just sent to various places as the lists were in their infancy. The patriarch of the family was SOL, the Scions of Lucas, thanks to Dale Cook and Jim Muller. Now there are over 60 Team.Net email lists, and about 14,000 subscribers scattered about the planet. And 19 years old describes my age when I moved to Salt Lake City, a young lad looking for adventure in the mountains through climbing and skiing. And many an adventure was to be had. The biggest was no doubt the Weird Winter Wall trip of 1977. I really need to write that up, get a bunch of the slides digitized to share with others. The short version is that I am amazingly lucky to still be alive. It was April 1st, 1977 when the four of us, hungry and exhausted, demoralized and chilled to the bone sat on a mountainside in the Wind Rivers and watched the sun come up. Sunrises are always beautiful, but to this day those firstly faint glowing streaks of red, orange and gold have never looked so welcome as on that morning. We knew we'd make it, we'd see more sunrises. It seems appropriate that we returned to civilization on April Fool's day. A winter ascent of the North Face of Mt. Hooker seems a fool's errand in hindsight. But I survived. And Team.Net has survived. There have certainly been many times over the years when I've felt the fool for putting in the effort to keep it going. Just hitting the off switch and walking away would have been so easy. But far more prominent are the occasions where a well crafted message, an unsolicited thank you or donation, a T shirt or some trinket unexpectedly showing up at my doorstep makes me realize what a treasure Team.Net has been over the years. There are untold old classics out there still on the road, thanks to you folks. Sure, you may have never turned a wrench on them, or pushed them in or out of the garage, but the technical support provided, along with the email equivalent of a friendly smile and a heartfelt pat on the back has kept folks going. They've taken that fool's errand of a hopeless restoration and brought it back from near death to see another sunrise. Phil, the creator of the Farley cartoon strip and Nigel Shiftright, passed away two years ago. The TC in the photo was his and his wife still owns it. Members of the Abington Rough Riders keep it running for her, no small task as Phil was his own very creative mechanic. Phil was a great guy and loved his British cars (he also owned a Jag Mk2 and when I first met him co-owned an MG Arnott). If you can find a copy of the original article (I have it) it includes Phil's drawings of Nigel doing his thing. For those of us who have taken the wheel of a TC and forced it to do things it was never meant to do such as turning, braking and traveling in a straight line; this article hits home and just another example of Phil's great sense of humor. If you can, please bring a folding chair, as my seating is limited (sorry - don't have the glorious spread that John or Dawson have). She is in pretty original and unmolested condition and a well sorted example of the Marque. I suppose it could be a daily driver if one wanted, but I haven't. The engine is a 907 Lotus DOHC 16 valve, 2000cc all aluminum dual carb 4 cylinder. There are about 70k on the clock, (not exactly sure as the po had to put in a different speedo) and the actual clock does not work. (no surprises there) There are a set of aftermarket Mags, (the spare tire/wheel are original though) pen striping and a luggage rack that the dealer had put on in 1974. The previous owner put on a set of SPAX, new carpets and a new convertible top, plus a hard top. Over my 6+ years the upgrades include a Delta padded roll bar, a cassette stereo (W/CD pigtail) 4 speakers, halogen head lamps, a 3 core radiator with a fan shroud and PerTronix ignition. Some of the replaced parts include: tie rod ends, ball joints, all motor mounts, rebuilt starter and alternator, complete exhaust system, U-joints, wheel cylinders and all of the rear suspension bushings. Oh, I am the second owner and I also have the original repair manual as well. You get the idea, it's well cared for, a great little car and a hoot to drive. Asking $8,000.00. Please call/write with any questions or comments and I do have pictures to forward to those interested. 707-836-1701 Cheers, Pat 74 JH 14858 From ctwehn at hughes.net Tue Apr 20 20:46:41 2010 From: ctwehn at hughes.net (Charlie Wehn) Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2010 02:46:41 +0000 (GMT) Subject: [Nobbc] Greg, I'll come to tech session, and bring chips and dip. A free car show introducing the cars and drivers to the public will take place on Nob Hill from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on April 25th. On Sunday, April 25th seventy historic race cars will arrive at Nob Hill from England, Ireland, Switzerland, Columbia, Italy and a dozen American states to take part in the historic journey. A free car show introducing the cars and drivers to the public will take place on Nob Hill from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on April 25th. The following morning, April 26th, the race will begin with all participating cars heading towards California Highway 1 north. The group will traverse back roads and pass through small towns on their way to Sonoma. The historic tour concludes in Sonoma on Thursday, April 29th with a free car show and a chance to meet the drivers and talk to them about their travels. The final car show will take place at the Lodge at Sonoma on Broadway between Leveroni and Napa Road at 4:00 pm. _______________________________________________ Nobbc mailing list Nobbc at autox.team.net http://autox.team.net/mailman/listinfo/nobbc From markdarley at mac.com Wed Apr 28 14:00:00 2010 From: markdarley at mac.com (Mark Darley) Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2010 13:00:00 -0700 Subject: [Nobbc] California MIlle In-Reply-To: References: <000c01cae3d0$597e42b0$0c7ac810$@com> <4BD4BFB5.80302@sonic.net> <20100428031108.ECBFE24DC98@mail.napanet.net> Message-ID: <3305FFE8-2433-45C1-B938-42FF67182C55@mac.com> Don, Yes, thanks for the heads up on the Mille. I plan to drive up to the Bolinas Ridge road tomorrow and see them coming along what must be one of the most spectacular roads in California. Then they are dropping into Mill Valley (renamed Mille Valley for the day by the mayor!) where they will do a drive by of Old Mill School for waving children. Very sorry I cannot make the gearbox workshop as I have another prior engagement. Hope you all have fun and that I have no reason to regret not attending in the near future! This June 4th at Jacuzzi Winery, the runway meets the raceway at Heels and Wheels: The 2nd Annual Bryant Park West Fashion Show, in partnership with Infineon Raceways Historic Motorsports Weekend. Heels and Wheels offers guests an effervescent evening that pairs vogue fashions with sublime vino and vintage automobiles in the dramatic Tuscan ambience of Sonoma Valley's Jacuzzi Winery, with all proceeds exclusively benefitting local nonprofit Sonoma Valley Teen Services. Displayed just outside, classic cars fresh off Infineon Raceway will turn heads and break hearts. The event is sponsored by Star Staffing, Infineon Raceway, Jacuzzi Vineyards, Douglas Thompson Photography, Jim Russell Racing and Belle Creative. Producer and Sonoma native Sarah Haggberg of J for Jordan Productions has worked with acclaimed designers in San Francisco, New York and throughout the Bay Area. Last years inaugural Bryant Park West experienced great success and featured an exclusive collection by Project Runways Rami Kashou. The idea for this event is to take my fashion show experience working with top designers at Olympus Fashion Week in Bryant Park and create a New York-styled show in Sonoma. Guests will be in heaven as they spend a beautiful summer evening in Wine Country, relishing the latest fashion trends and gorgeous vintage wheels, not to mention indulging in fresh artisan cuisine, champagne and Jacuzzis exquisite wines," says Haggberg. "Attendees will also have an opportunity to mingle with designers and stylists and even purchase what they see in the show that night." Hunter Dixon, co-founded three years ago by Southern-born pair Hunter Bell and Jennifer Dixon, continues to dazzle fashionistas nation wide with feminine, flirty and whimsical designs. Their remarkable tops, dresses and jackets have been spotlighted in such publications including ELLE, Harpers Bazaar, Lucky Magazine, IN STYLE and People Style Watch. Go to www.hunterdixon.com for more details. With recent stints at Alexander McQueen and Hermes, Samantha Sleepers elegant and edgy looks have become highly sought after by the Hollywood and fashion elite, just months following her graduation from the design program at Parsons. Now designing for a new luxury dress line N PRPA, Sleepers collection is also featured on the new television show The Beautiful Life. For more information, go to www.samanthasleeper.com . The sexy La Isla Couture was established in Colombia, South America in 2003 and has been recognized around the globe for its hip, chic, and trendy swimwear, described by many as the perfect fusion between latin style and true American spiritowing to the founders distinct cultural roots and the fact that all its pieces are designed and manufactured in the U.S.A. Sports Illustrated, Seventeen, Instyle, Zink!, Oxygen, the LA Times, New Canaan and Hispanic Magazine have all featured La Isla in their pages. Go to www.laislacouture.com for more information. Located in the heart of the Sonoma-Carneros Region, Jacuzzi Family Vineyards is a mere 45 minutes north of San Francisco. The 18,000-square-foot winery is modeled after the Jacuzzi family home in Udine, Italy. Under magnificent pieces of Italian art, Venetian-style glass chandeliers and handmade furnishings, visitors can sample award-winning wines including Barbera, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Primitivo and Sangiovese. Sonoma Valley Teen Services, the beneficiary of the show's proceeds, represents the merger of two critical teen service organizations: Operation Youth and Valley of the Moon Teen Center. Together, they encompass vast array of programs and safe sites for teens: The Shop Limited, now in its tenth year, is a drug-and-alcohol-free music venue run by teens; the No Name Cafe at Sonoma Valley High School provides a multipurpose venue for everything from art programs to work experience and academic tutoring; the new Teen Center in the Springs provides a safe space for classes and enrichment activities; and Teen Safe Ride keeps the roads safe by offering taxi vouchers home to teens in an unsafe situation. Overall, Sonoma Valley Teen Services aims to promote teens well-being and life skills through job readiness, good decision-making practices, safe spaces, academic tutoring, access to the arts, healthy meal planning and more. I have a 74 Jensen Healey and when purchased it was recommended to use Castrol 20 50 which I did for 75,000 miles. No problems. At one point I accidently purchased a case of 10 40 and used it with no problems. So my gut response would be, shouldn't be a problem for one round. I change oil at 2000 miles along with the oil in the filter. Then change oil and filter at 4000 miles. However if you really want to become an expert in the field of oil try this site. http://www.supramania.com/aehaas/ Hope this helps, Clif -------------------------------------------------- From: "tony korman" Sent: Friday, April 30, 2010 3:33 PM To: "North Bay British Car Club" Subject: Re: [Nobbc] [oil > Looking for a bit of advise.
