Club members Andy and Marla Preston led a convoy of MGAs (and other Brit 
makes) from the NAMGAR West meet on a great tour of some of our best 
roads and sights today. It was fun just being one of many MGAs for a 
change. We went out to the coast with a stop at Goat Rock then on to Dry 
Creek and Alexander Valleys with stops at Mill Creek Winery (lunch on 
their deck) and Hanna. Nobbc was well represented with several members 
in attendance. The weather could not have been better.

NAMGAR continues tomorrow with a show and tech sessions at the 
Doubletree in Rohnert Park, stop in if you get a chance! Our next ride 
will be next weekend. Anyone care to lead or suggest a ride?

I have a similar situation. The TR-6 has slipped the flywheel starter
ring. Either I have to remove the tranny or drill a hole in the tranny
bell and knock the thing back into place with a drift and apply a few
spot welds through the starter port.

What a pisser!

I am not real sharp at times but if you can weld it through the starter port
could you not knock it back into place through the same hole?

If anyone is out on a drive Sunday in the Fairfield vicinity, be sure to
drop by the Jaguar Concours event being hosted by the Sacramento Jaguar
Club at the Ledgewood Creek Winery on Abernathy Road (look for the exit
off Highway 80 in the vicinity of the Budweiser Brewery and the Highway
12 to Rio Vista exit).  Take Abernathy Road north about 2 miles and you
will see Ledgewood Creek Winery on the left.  Some outstanding entries
are supposed to be present and the event is free to the public.  Event
starts at 0900. Dew Drop Inn.

I am attempting to learn all the subtleties of judging for authenticity.

Hi Rich and Paige,

Tranny problems are a bitch, BUT, I had my daughter's tranny for 2000 GMC 
Jimmy rebuilt at Vaughn's Transmissions, Dutton Court in Santa Rosa $1300, 
1/3 of the next best price I could get, even from my regular mechanic. He 
also gave me a quote to remove, rebuild, replace the tranny in my TR4 of 
$650. MORE than reasonable. They are cheap, timely (one day), and have a 
good rep from other trusted mechanics. I checked up on them quite a bit 
before taking the Jimmy there, it's only been a few months, but it's running 
great. One word of caution, be very specific about what you want done. They 
did not replace the torque converter (standard procedure in a rebuild) 
saying the old one was not bad, (but they go bad). I took the car back to 
them, I voluntarily paid $100 for the part, but they did the R&R and 
installation for free. Made me happy, and my TR is going in for a re-build 
and new clutch soon. Overall, I was quite happy with the job, especially at 
the price.

Difficult since the ring has been knocked backwards but not off of the
flywheel. Not enough space to get a pry bar in to the starter port to
force the ring forward. Being the original owner of this 73 and having
put 327,000 miles on the beast I don't think there is a part on the car
that I haven't touched. This is the second instance of this happening
over the years. The good part is that I have things down to a system. If
it turns out I need to remove the tranny, by experience I know that I
can have it out and back in just about six hours. In that case I would
also install a new ring. Have so many other projects in the works though
that time is of the essence. The other projects have also thinned my
wallet considerably or I would have the whole thing done by BEM. Anyone
on the list want to bid on the project. I'll have the interior out and
the tunnel off.

Hi Folks,
How did today's drive go? Who all showed up, and where did you go?
We hosted a Lotus club event, but because this was a club sanctioned event,
their insurance restrictions meant we had to limit it to club members.
I think we may have recruited one or two new members to the NOBBC however,
so that was a side benefit.

Dennis, Sheryl, Walter, his stepson and moi. Also John was at the start 
in his XKE but couldn't make the ride. We took a nice drive over Franz 
Valley Rd. to Calistoga then down Silverado Trail to Mumm Napa and back 
to St. Helena for lunch at the Olive Oil Company followed by a brisk 
drive home on St. Helena Rd. It was cool at the start but warmed up 
quite nicely. What a great place we live in! I was surprised more people 
didn't show up but I guess there were a few other events. One more ride 
this month and I suppose we will switch to our winter schedule.

Went over to Fairfield today for the Jaguar concours put on by the
Sacramento and San Francisco JCNA clubs.  The cars were great, including a
very nice 1961 XKE, a 1952 XK120 and a 1947 Mk V.  About 40 to 45 cars in
all.  Unfortunately, the weather was a bit challenging as it stayed cold,
overcast and windy all day.  Lunch in the Ledgewood Creek Winery barrel room
proved to be the warm part of the day.  Hey, at least there's no wind in
there.

I want to convert to front disc brakes.
I have looked up the front wheel bearings for drum and disc brakes and they 
 appear to be the same for many Triumph cars.
I also understand that some TR 7 or TR 8's have five bolt rotors.
Please share your expertise with me.  I don't know what to buy, or  where.

Hi Kerry,
I believe you'll find that the Spitfire disk brakes are what you are 
looking for. I believe you'll need the uprights, axles, caliper bracket, 
steering arms, discs, hoses and calipers.
A potential upgrade would be from the GT6, though I'm not sure how well 
balanced your braking system would be, or if these are needed. What kind 
of car is this?

The tech guys at Moss Motors, should be able to help you with the proper 
technical info, and probably the parts. Also, contact Waynes Triumphs Only 
in Stockton. He is hard to get a hold of, but he knows Triumphs thoroughly, 
and he sells Moss parts at 15% less. He even uses Moss part numbers, and if 
he doesn't have the part, he will take your order, and have it shipped 
direct from Moss, and you still get the discount. I did this two weeks ago 
buying a water pump and a couple of other items for my TR.

I have a '73 MGB and curiously in turning off and removing the key the whole
ignition switch barrel came with it. Putting it back in still starts the car
but obviously there must be a locking ring or something that holds it in.  The
diagram in my "The Complete Official MGB 1962-1974" really doesn't show much.
The same with Moss and other sources. What's up and how do you solve this
problem?

Look for a set screw that might have loosened and fell to the floor. They can be about very small. Look on the under side of the mechanism to see if there is a small threaded hole.

My Series III XJ6 Jaguar has been acting up the past few months.  First, a
few months back it started cutting out while driving.  The tach was swinging
wildly which I am informed is symptomatic of a faulty ignition module so I
replaced that.  I also rewired all those little wires coming off the coil
since they were pretty well baked and barely hanging on.  All was well for a
couple months, until things started happening again a couple weeks ago.  It
started cutting out again, but the tach was fine.  My Jag friends up north,
who know a heck of a lot more about these things than me, suggested there
may be a problem with the fuel injection.  Sure enough, a number of the
wiring connections are in pretty sad shape and jostling some of the
connections with the engine idling causes the engine to die.  XKs Unlimited
in San Luis Obispo wants $500+ for a fuel injection wiring harness.  Ouch!
Being a cheapskate at heart, I figure it shouldn't be all that difficult to
make a harness.  I was planning on showing the car at the Sacramento JCNA
show in Fairfield this weekend, but with my AAA tows maxed out for the year,
I was too scared to risk driving it that far from home.  It's time to fix
the problem properly.  Wish me luck and let's hope we're back on the road
soon.

Hi Bill, you need to remove the plastic cowling around the steering column
to see what has fallen out.  There is some type of anti theft mechanism
attached to the column ignition switch that prevent the steering column from
turning and that's obviously broken.  I'm going on vacation in a couple of
days time but if you want to drop by after Oct 28 I'd be pleased to see if I
can help.

Great pics Norm, lots of interesting cars. I noticed a few club member 
cars in your pics including Gil's modified XK140 and Andy and Marla's

Ron et al.,
Andy and Marla of course walked off with high honors to absolutely no one's
surprise. The competition in the Jaguar classes was ferocious and I can't
begin to compete with those cars. That's all right. They tend not to show up
on 800-mile rallies either... Pete and Nancy Bergman were there however for
both the drive and the show in their exquisite BRG 120 roadster in which
they also rally. My apologies for neglecting such large swaths of wonderful
cars, most particularly the Lotuses and MG's to some extent as well,
particularly the B's, And I didn't even see that wonderful motorcycle (there
was apparently another similar one as well). My friend Gary who still owns
the sort of candy-apple red XK120 roadster (pictured) will doubtless make
amends for this and I will attempt to procure a link for this as well.

Hwy. We will change to our cool weather schedule next month, ie. one 
ride a month starting at Noon.

The weather is forecast to be spectacular on Saturday so come out and 
enjoy it while it lasts. If anyone has a particular destination to visit 
  pipe up here or on Saturday at the meet.

Hi Greg,

I belong to a club called TRAD JASS (Tradtional Ragtime and Dixieland Jazz
Appreciation & Strutters Society - www.tradjass.org). We meet on the first
Sunday of every month except July at the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa for
live music and dancing from 1:00 to 5:30PM. A working band is featured on
three sets, with seven additional sets open for jam sessions with local
musicians. The Saloon has a two venues so there is continuous music all
afternoon. As the name implies, the genre is the classic, traditional (or
whatever you want to call it) jazz of the 1920s and 30s up to the swing era,
the music as played in New Orleans, Chicago and New York in those days by such
luminaries as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Kid Ory, Duke Ellington and
others. In order to promote the club we recruit jam bands to play at the
Farmers Market on the Saturdays closest to the upcomong club meetings. You may
have heard us at one of those. The Farmers Market management usually sets
aside four to six dates a year for us to play. We're going to be there
tomorrow from 9:00 to 11:00AM. The RR Square gig is the same deal, promoting
our November 1 meeting, and at the same time helping out the RR Square
Merchants Association by donating our time and talent (such as it is) to help
them promote their event. I play the trombone.

My regular gig is with the Gold Goast Jazz Band (www.goldcoastjazz.com). We
work all over the Bay Area for jazz society meetings, special events, private
parties, etc. On the last Saturday of every month except December you'll find
us playing at Little Switzerland in Sonoma from 1:00 to 4:00PM. If you guys
are out for a ride on one of those Saturdays you might want to stop by.
Bennett Valley Road to Glen Ellen and the back roads that sort of parallel
Arnold Drive would be an entertaining way to get there. The food is good and
there's a large dance floor, so spouses and significant others might want to
come along.

Two other ride destinations in the Sonoma Area that come to mind are Cline
Winery out on Hwy 121 - wonderful picnic grounds and parking that would show
the cars off well; and the airport at Schelleville, home to many antique
airplanes and warbirds - you can even hop a ride in the local barnstormer's
WWII Stearman biplane if you're so inclined.

Sorry for the long answer to your short question. They say retirement is when
you get to do what you were meant for all along, and for me it's turned out to
be music and old British cars.

Hi Bill,

Great to hear some Dixieland and nice to know there are some groups
preserving the music in the area.
I was born in New Orleans (Nawlins) and lived there until I was 7 years
old, so I kind of grew up with this music. We would also visit my  
grandparents
in Baton Rouge every Christmas so that kept it going. Lots of fun.
I will make it out to the Last Day Saloon one evening when you are  
playing.

Thanks John. For those of you who were unable to attend, we had a really
nice ride down to Sonoma and a picnic at the scenic Bartholomew Park
Winery. The weather was perfect...there is no way it could have been
better. We had a new member, Paul, with a nice and interesting Daimler,
beautifu; car!

Kentfield at between 9:00 and 10:00.  If any of you northern types want to 
meet us we could plan to be at the Cheese Factory at about 11:00.  We plan

The trip to the Tomales History Center sounds intriguing.  We had a
beautiful Sunday last weekend at Inverness and Point Reyes Station.
Oysters at Drakes Bay Estuary then a stop at Vladimir's Czech Restaurant
for a cold draught and cabbage made for a sleepy afternoon on the beach.
Ready to go north this time.

We plan on meeting you at the Cheese Factory as we come from the
Napa/Fairfield vicinity.
