Hi Robin,

Be careful with this TR, the pics may look good, and the car may even be in 
good shape, but you cannot tell from pics. I talked to a guy at the vintage 
races yesterday that had a BEAUTIFUL 55 TR2 that he bought sight un-seen 
back east for $10000. He was told the car was restored, looked like it in 
the pics, but was actually close to basket case. Go look at it, have checked 
out, or buy something closer to home. You'll be much happier.

Thanks, Michael, that's sound advice. There is nothing like a thorough
physical inspection. Looking at the pictures is probably a first step for
Don. Hopefully they show welding and treatment of the metal.

I bought a couple of cars sight-unseen from remote areas, a Riley 1.5 sedan from
Hawaii and a '62 Buick Skylark convertible w/factory 4-speed and 215 V8 from
Connecticut.  I learned the hard way on those cars.  The cars looked great in
photos, but in person they had more needs than I could have imagined.  And I
had a local person look at both cars, and those guys were marque enthusiasts
too.  Should have learned on the Skylark, but the Riley was a car I had
actually seen and riden in- but several years before.  It had suffered at the
hands of a stupid owner in the interim. 
If I proceed on the TR4 in VA, I ill fly out thereto to look at it before buying
it.

Don,

Where in VA is the car located?  May be a good shop that can look over the 
car for you.  Another option is to have someone local to look at the car. 
On the 6pack forum, they do offer a surrogate buyer program, would be 
willing to post to see if anyone is in the area who could look the car over 
for you.

I concur with Greg. Jerry hosted the club and gave us a very interesting 
afternoon demonstrating his machines and skill. I was impressed by the

work for years; they are on Colgan, and may be a good place to enquire about

Last week I put new master and slave cylinders in my TR 4. The clutch works
great, but when I shift, the clutch petal chatters and groans under foot. We
are bleeding the line again this morning, but this is something I have not
seen before. Any ideas?

That does not sound like a problem with the hydraulic system. More like
issues with the clutch pressure plate, disk. Or throw out bearing.

Michael - I have a couple of questions to help clarify, in my mind, your
description of the problem. First, why was it necessary to change out the
M/C and slave? Were the seals bad, did you have a problem shifting, were you
losing fluid? Is the "chattering" just something you hear (like the
groaning) or do you feel it when you release the clutch? Did it help to
rebleed the system?

Hi Robin and Mitch,

I have owned this car since 1975, daily driver until 1982, situations 
change, lost my job and the rear seal, and the car sat until the engine was 
rebuilt in 1987. I put a new clutch in with the rebuild, drove the car very 
little until 1995, sold her, and got her back in 1997, and still has very 
few miles on the motor and clutch. She sat in  my garage until last month 
when I brought her back to life, and after 12 years of sitting, all of the 
hydraulics went south. I replaced the brake, MC, rear cylinders and axel 
seals immediately, and then the clutch hydraulics last week, but the slave 
was put in upside down with the bleed nipple down, and very little time to 
bleed it before  we put the MC in last Friday. So I need to reposition and 
bleed the slave this week, BUT the old slave was in upside down as well, and 
I did not have this new problem. It could be the clutch plate, oil on it 
maybe, I am hoping the problem goes away after repositioning and bleeding 
the slave. I do have a pretty good oil leak at the rear seal, and the rear 
end of the tranny, I hope I don't have oil on the clutch plate. But this 
groaning chatter only appeared when we put the new clutch MC in, and now she 
chatters and groans, and kind of slides into gear when I shift. After 34 
years with this car, this is a new one on me.  I think the consensous will 
be oil on the clutch plate. Any ideas? All suggestions will be greatly 
appreciated. I can't tell you how much fun  it is to drive my baby once 
again after all these years, it will be more fun when I've gotten rid of all 
the bugaboos and noises.

Make sure you have correct freeplay. Chattering may be oil on the driven
disc; usually called judder. Groaning must emminate from moving parts:
operating shaft, fork, release bearing, pressure plate. (I have seen the
tapered pin wear and/or loosen, allowing the fork to turn on the shaft. )

I would (1) check the freeplay,(2)  bleed the system and ensure there is no
bubbling in your bleed jar, if that's what you use. (I have sometimes had to
use a pressure system.) (3) test - Have someone release the clutch (engine
off) and watch the pushrod for movement. Put the car in gear, release the
clutch and have someone rock the car by hand. it should roll if the clutch
is disengaging.

If all that is correct, you still have the chattter and groaning, which may
entail pulling the tran for an inspection. And replacing the rear seal.

Hope this helps a bit. I'll be out of town through this Sunday. Let us know
how it goes

Hi Michael,
I had two TR-3's and two TR-4's. I would agree with all below.
One item not covered in this list is the pilot bushing in the end
of the crankshaft. If it is worn, it can allow the transmission
input shaft to move and might cause problems of the type
you are describing. Just something more to check.

Hi Deborah,
 I recommend a man named Tim Welch, he's a mobile mechanic. We
have him work on our vehicles. I manage to do all the mechanics on my Healeys,
so I don't know how familiar he is with the British stuff. But they are
generally pretty basic. He currently charges an amazing $35 an hour and his
number is 758-2778. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The list server seems to have developed a glitch in the last week or so 
disabling some accounts due to bounces. I think I have re-enabled all 
the disabled accounts but if long periods of time go by without any list 
email contact me and I'll check it out. I know Mark (team.net owner) has 
been having a problem with his ISP and had to switch providers so maybe 
this is the source of the problem. Some email companies will bounce mail 
if your mailbox is full so clean it out periodically.

Rohnert
Park and recommend their work highly.  

Mark Singleton and team did the total
restoration on our
1969 MGB in 1999-2000 timeframe and we have been really
happy
with the results and service before and after the rebuild.

I am having some electrical work done on my '52 Jag and hope to meet up
with you all soon.  A while back there was some NOBBC discussion I
believe regarding fitting the distributor with electronic ignition, and
I think I'd like to have that done as well as have an electric fan
installed to assist with the radiator cooling.

Perhaps someone could comment on the pro's and con's of electronic
ignition and whether or why having the polarity changed to negative
ground is a good or bad idea, and what that affects.

I am told that each one of these things are not particularly costly to
do.

What do you think?

I've left my 1965 Spitfire positive ground and have only had a problem with 
replacing the instrument voltage regulator.  My type is only available in 
negative ground and I had to make one out of modern solid state parts.  The 
other issue would be modern stereos and other components not suitable for 
use.  I have to wear gloves to use my timing light so I don't get shocked 
holding it.

  If you move to a pertronics ignighter type electronic ignition (fits in 
the dizzy without permanent modification), there is only one type available 
for positive earth, at least when I bought mine a few years back  I'm sold 
on those and put them in my '64 beetle and '69 bus.  No more points to 
replace and gap, plus the timing remains set as the points don't wear out. 
They also will overcome any dizzy shaft wobble, from wear, that leads to 
rougher idles.  Cost is about $100.00 for the kit.

Anyway that's my two cents.

I'm afraid you'll find the Pertronix kit a wee bit more dear (about double)
for the Jag, at least from XK's Unlimited. I got one and proceeded to fry it
not knowing that my 140 had already been converted to negative ground. The
consensus seems to be that they're great, but there is a non-trivial
percentage which digresses from this view. My mechanic is not among the latter
(he thinks it's a great idea). So my task now is to squirrel away the cash...
Not easy when the car's running like a top...

Hi Charlie, changing the polarity is very simple and means that you can use
modern car radios and electric fans if you want to.  It's also nothing that
can't be changed back for the die hard purist.  I've changed both my 67 MGB
and 60 MGA to negative ground.  In fact with the MGA all I had to do was
change the battery cables around and re-polarize the generator which was
rebuilt in any case as negative ground.  The rev  counter is cable driven
which I assume is the same on your Jag so you don't have to mess with that.
Petronix is fabulous and I had it on my 74 MGB GT for about 4 years and
removed it when I had starting problems, which turned out to be unrelated to
Petronix.  I should re-install it but haven't bothered because the car runs
great with the old points.  I tried to fit a new Petronix on my 67 MGB
(converted from positive to negative ground) and for some reason fried the
system so have stayed with points again.  Overall I think it's the way to go
and should re-do it on all my cars again.

For those of you who don't know, MJB is Mark Bradakis, owner of team.net 
and host for our Nobbc mail list. As you know, Nobbc doesn't have any 
dues and just ocasionally asks for donations for our website etc. Well, 
Mark works the same way, doesn't charge for any of his lists including 
ours but does ask for donations. He usually only sends his requests to 
the bigger lists like the MG list and doesn't bother the smaller private 
lists. I sent the below information to you all to explain a problem some 
members were having (those with AOL addresses) with bounced emails to 
our list. But I'm also putting in a plug for his second paragraph asking 
for donations. It would be really nice if some of you would donate to 
Mark's lists (including Nobbc). It's a service that is really helpful to 
Nobbc in particular and the rest of the British car lists in general and 
well worthy of our support. I will be sending him a small amount of cash 
and urge you to do so also. I'll be glad to answer any questions about this.

No need for us to collect anything; Mark has a Paypal button on his 
donation page (http://www.team.net/donate.html) and also info on paying 
by check or credit card, couldn't be easier. $5 is the amount usually 
suggested for donation on the lists and is what I sent.

Heh, mighty generous John...can you adopt me? Seriously, we get a great 
benefit from this list and any others we may be members of (I'm also on 
the MGs list) so I'm glad Nobbc can show Mark its appreciation.

At some point, the club itself will have to hold out a donation can for 
the web site, etc. The spirit of this club has always been to have NO 
dues and rely solely on voluntary donations.

Well, we used to have a Saturday ride and a Sunday ride every month. The 
Sunday rides weren't popular and the club voted to switch to Saturdays 
only. This is the Nobbc, however, and there ain't no steenkin' rules so 
if you want to lead a Sunday ride, go for it! I know people will show up 
and it would be nice to ride with the Wheelers. Personally, I'll ride 
any day of the week, had a great ride to Sonoma today though it was hot.

I'm back from Europe, will probably join if I can plow my way through  
enough of the accumulated piles.

I see more elderly British cars here than I ever saw in England!

In Juillard Park on Sunday from 9 a to 4 p there is the annual  
Father's Day Show & Shine car show.

We could work in a stop there.

If anyone wants to show off their car, you have to register in  
advance, 546 5500. It's $30.

it would be nice to have a couple of club members showing cars.

I'd also like to have an NOBBC banner made up when I have the time,  
for such events.

Hi Charlie, changing the polarity is very simple and means that you can
use
modern car radios and electric fans if you want to.  It's also nothing
that
can't be changed back for the die hard purist.  I've changed both my 67
MGB
and 60 MGA to negative ground.  In fact with the MGA all I had to do was
change the battery cables around and re-polarize the generator which was
rebuilt in any case as negative ground.  The rev  counter is cable
driven
which I assume is the same on your Jag so you don't have to mess with
that.
Petronix is fabulous and I had it on my 74 MGB GT for about 4 years and
removed it when I had starting problems, which turned out to be
unrelated to
Petronix.  I should re-install it but haven't bothered because the car
runs
great with the old points.  I tried to fit a new Petronix on my 67 MGB
(converted from positive to negative ground) and for some reason fried
the
system so have stayed with points again.  Overall I think it's the way
to go
and should re-do it on all my cars again.

I am having some electrical work done on my '52 Jag and hope to meet up
with you all soon.  A while back there was some NOBBC discussion I
believe regarding fitting the distributor with electronic ignition, and
I think I'd like to have that done as well as have an electric fan
installed to assist with the radiator cooling.

Perhaps someone could comment on the pro's and con's of electronic
ignition and whether or why having the polarity changed to negative
ground is a good or bad idea, and what that affects.

I am told that each one of these things are not particularly costly to
do.

What do you think?

ONCE AGAIN I'VE VOLUNTEERED TO LEAD A RIDE.

WE ARE GOING ON SUNDAY SO THAT RON AND RICK WHEELER CAN JOIN US.

10 AM AT THE COMMUTER PARKING LOT ON RIVER ROAD. DEPARTURE AT 10:30 SHARP

AS THIS RIDE IS A LITTLE LONGER THAN USUAL.

 

ROUTE:

 

WEST ON RIVER ROAD TO CAZADERO HIGHWAY THROUGH CAZADERO

TO KING RIDGE ROAD. KING RIDGE IS A BEAUTIFUL TWISTY ONE LANE ROAD THAT
CLIMBS

WAY UP HIGH WITH GREAT VISTAS AND THEN WE WILL DROP DOWN TO THE COAST AND

VISIT KRUSE RHODODENDRON PARK BRIEFLY. THEN OVER TO SALT POINT PARK FOR 

A PICNIC LUNCH AND DOWN THE COAST TO HOME.

 

I WENT THERE YESTERDAY AND IT WAS FREEZING ON THE COAST

SO BRING PLENTY OF LAYERS, A FULL TANK OF GAS AND

A GOURMET PICNIC LUNCH.

 May I humbly suggest that we call "DAWN PATROL" and leave the parking lot at
seven a.m.? Yeah, I know, you have to get out of bed at dawn, but you will be
driving on OPEN ROADS instead of the rolling touristo parade you'll see at ten
thirty plus. Just a thought... I like to DRIVE, not PARADE.  Tom (Grinnall

LAST SATURDAY WE LEFT AT NOON AND DROVE THE ROUTE AND PASSED 2 CARS ON KING
RIDGE ROAD
AND ONLY ONE ON CAZADERO HIGHWAY. THEN ON HIGHWAY 1 PEOPLE KEPT PULLING OVER
FOR US
INCLUDING A HARLEY!

If you do it at seven a.m., no one will pull over for you on hwy one, because

Last time we went on Kruse Rhododendron Rd. I got a lot of grief from 
everyone following behind me...it's a dirt Rd. We can instead go through 
Stewart's Point and down the coast, paved all the way! King Ridge is one 
of our most scenic roads and well worth the trip.

People with AOL addresses are being bounced from the list again. I've 
reinstated them but lets hope Mark get's this problem sorted out. 
(Charlie or anyone with an AOL address, let me know if you get this).

Hi Ron, John,

I'm definitely not interested in driving dirt roads, or really potted 
roads in either the Elan or the TR6 - just not enough clearance and 
suspensions are too stiff to make it fun. I've got two 4wd vehicles when 
I want to go off-road. ;-)

Regarding parading vs. driving, our club seems to have two camps - one 
for each activity. We've lost members to the Wine Country Car Club who 
prefer less spirited drives, with more socializing and public display of 
their nice cars, and we've gained new members who like to drive. 
However, there does seem to be an interest in mixing the activities, and 
I think we can accommodate driving, socializing and public appreciation.

John and I discussed his route preparation, and the hopes we'll have a 
good turnout. Because the route is a little long, and on quite twisty 
roads, we were talking about splitting the group into two; those in the 
lead who want to go a little faster, led by John, and a more sedate 
group with a different leader. Everyone has the route, and I'll bring a 
couple of FRS radios which may be of some help if we aren't separated by 
too much distance. We can also exchange cell phone numbers if needed; 
those of us with a navigator can safely drive if the navigator handles 
the comms.

I think the problem has something to do with the way AOL interfaces with 
the list server, I did receive an email a while back from the Mark 
(team.net owner) saying he thought he had it fixed but I guess he's 
still working on it.

After a certain number of emails bounce back to the list server, you are 
suspended and receive no more mail. The list should notify you of the 
suspension. I have been going to the Nobbc list administrator page and 
manually reinstating you and you can go to the member page to reinstate 
yourself.

Another solution would be to use any other email address and re-register 
with the list. I'll go to the administrators page and see if there is 
any way I can tweak the bounce processing. I know it can be turned off 
but that presents another bunch of possible problems.

I would personally suggest giving Google's Gmail a try. I recently switched
over from hotmail (which I've used for many, many years) in their favor (I'm
now at norman.weinfeld at gmail.com) and hope soon to never again look back.
Though not as bad as AOL, the ever-wonderful Microsoft's new Windows Live
Mail (which is to replace the old Outlook Express any day now) is a true
horror. A pox on both their houses I say!

For leading the club drive yesterday!
Though I'd driven the surrounding roads a number of times, and thought 
they'd make a great club route, I'd never taken King Ridge Road. After 
zipping around, Trish and I realized how beautiful the road and views 
were, so we slowed down to enjoy the scenery - what a blast! They aren't 
exaggerating the name of the road - at one point you look over both 
sides of the ridge from your seat.
I'm sorry we had a few casualties - Norm broke down before meeting up 
(he drives that Jag all over the place, so it's allowed a little down 
time), and Ron Wheeler peeled off with mechanical troubles.I hope you 
will get up and running soon without too much effort.
It was great meeting up with new members - hope to see you again soon.

For leading the club drive yesterday!
Though I'd driven the surrounding roads a number of times, and thought 
they'd make a great club route, I'd never taken King Ridge Road. After 
zipping around, Trish and I realized how beautiful the road and views 
were, so we slowed down to enjoy the scenery - what a blast! They aren't 
exaggerating the name of the road - at one point you look over both 
sides of the ridge from your seat.
I'm sorry we had a few casualties - Norm broke down before meeting up 
(he drives that Jag all over the place, so it's allowed a little down 
time), and Ron Wheeler peeled off with mechanical troubles.I hope you 
will get up and running soon without too much effort.
It was great meeting up with new members - hope to see you again soon.

John, I too thank you for allowing me to tag along. It was a beautiful run
and I returned home to a temperature in Healdsburg of 104! Thanks to all
that were so kind as to accept fliers for our upcoming car show in August.
If NBBCC is interested in organizing a run on the Saturday in conjunction
with our show you might have a huge turnout. Our club will be busy setting
up the Sunday show on Saturday.

It was good finally meeting you Peter! I'm sure we can organize some 
kind of ride for Saturday. As I said, I'll be unable to make it but I'm 
sure we can get a volunteer to lead a ride. In fact, I think we should
