Today is the eighth anniversary of the first NOBBC meeting on August 
4th, 2001 in the old Safeway parking lot on 4th at College. Many of the 
handful of people at that meeting are still active in the club, some 
have passed on. The club has grown considerably to the point that we now 
number roughly 135 members.

We usually celebrate with a trip out to Fisk Mill Cove but we've been 
there twice in the last few months so we'll wait until the 15th for our 
regular ride to reminisce. I'll be out riding today so wave or honk if 
you see me!

Dennis and I went to the 2007 NAMGBR at the Rohnert Park Doubletree and had a very good time. The NAMGAR event is being put on by some of the same people and I think it will be a lot of fun. We own 2 MGB's and will probably stop in to socialize and see the cars.

going to be wonderful.  You can check out the itinerary at namgarwest09.com.
It's an official NAMGAR Regional event and should be lots of fun.  The
format will be similar to the NAMGBR National that the same group (MG Owners
Club) organized in 2007 at the Doubletree.  It's an MGA event, although all
other MGs are welcome as well as all other British sports cars.  Definitely
worth $40 these days.  If you need any other information just let me know.

Sounds Great.
My daily driver is not really show quality but I am interested in the drives 
and the tech sessions.  I went to the namgbr event also and I seem to 
remember John Twist from the former University Motors was there.  Any chance 
he will make it again?  Any idea what the tech sessions will include? Web 
site doesn't seem to elaborate on this. I am sending off my $40 plus another 
$40+ for the hooded sweat shirt.  It will be nice to see all those mga's 
especially on the drives to the coast and wine country.

It's officially an "A" event but all MG's especially "B"s are welcome and
there will be a MGB class at the car show, and the cars don't have to be
"show" quality.  It's just fun to see all the MGs grouped together at a car
show.

Hi Liam, we're still finalizing the tech sessions but I'm sorry to say that
John Twist will not be there.  He was at the NAMBGR in Colorado in July and
did one of his rolling tech sessions which are amazing to see and listen
too.

Speaking of car shows, it must be the season.  I met a guy yesterday from
the Redwood Empire Mini Enthusiasts group.  Peter Zedrick is his name and
some of you may know him.  Anyway, he asked me to post some info about their
upcoming British car show in Santa Rosa.  It's in two weeks on Sunday,
August 23rd, at Fred Stokes Ranch at 5525 Old redwood Hwy.  I think a few
NOBBC members have already signed up.  I checked their website and saw a
couple familiar names.  They've got about 70 cars signed up, most of them
British.  Lots of Minis, of course.  Although the post July 31 entry fee is
$30, Fred said they would extend the advance registration fee of $25 for
anyone who signed up by Friday.  Check their website for more info.

But it needs more than paint.  It also needs a bit of body work to get all 
the little dings straight.
However,  I am in the middle of restoring my other little british car, a 59

Any time Liam,  but just to let you know, I can do light body work, dents, 
dings etc. just not major stuff like stretching or lead fill. Also, my first 
car, and probably one of my 3 favorites was a 59 Bugeye. I still think of 
that wreck, all the work I did to it, how much damn fun I had it that thing. 
Now that I think about it, that was probably THE most fun to drive car I've 
had. That's about 30 cars and 40 years ago. I'm always looking for something 
to play with, I wouldn't mind having another Bugeye. Call me if you change

THIS WAS THE FIRST SHOW I EVER SHOWED A CAR IN.
I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT BUT IT'S JUST A BUNCH OF CAR NUTS HAVING A CAR
WORSHIP DAY.
IT WAS FUN, THE WEATHER TURNED NICE, OVER 100 CARS SHOWN
MANY INTERESTING CARS, A GORGEOUS 1954 NASH HEALEY ( I GUESS THAT'S WHAT IT
WAS )
SEVERAL VERY NICE HEALEYS , AND A LARGE TURN OUT OF NOBBC FOLKS.
NOT TO MENTION A PLETHORA OF MINI'S.

Thanks much for my "Most Popular British Car" Award for our black & burgundy Healey 3000. I am humbled by all the votes we received. The '54 Nash Healey was exceptional (btw, for a 4-year marque... they only produced 504 overall cars). Also enjoyed the red/black '55 Healey 100m and the cream Morris Traveler Woodie. 

Kudos to the Stoke Family Farm and to the RE Mini Association and all the vendors. Good job!

We had a fantastic time at the car show! Thank you all that attended and
made it such a success! I posted my photos at:

96, unfortunately I lost about 15-20 photos due to the setting dial rotating
on the back of my camera, but I am sure someone will post additional
pictures of the cars that were left out in my album. We had an official
count of 110 registered cars, plus the parking area was full of British &
European cars that came just to view the cars and a few others tha parked in
the show that were not registered... so I am sure there were closer to 125
there most of the day.

I am unaware of anyone that was disappointed or upset that registered for
the show. There may have been a few grumblings that I am not aware of
regarding the number of MINIs in attendance, but it was Redwood Empire MINI
Enthusiasts that put on the show so registrants should have predicted that.
The winners were almost entirely non Mini-MINI cars, and some beautiful
vehicles were acknowledged. I for one voted for the Nash Healey and Brad's
3000. The Nash was beautifully restored and was a stunning car. There was an
Alfa Romeo parked behind the show that was a gorgeous car (but did not
enter).

There were gifts/door prizes awarded throughout the day (by drawing) and the
awards program started around 3:30pm. I think the single most enjoyable
moment was when the gentleman that had the pre-1960's VW convertible won an
award. I never saw such a smile on anyone's face!

Thanks much for my "Most Popular British Car" Award for our black & burgundy
Healey 3000. I am humbled by all the votes we received. The '54 Nash Healey
was exceptional (btw, for a 4-year marque... they only produced 504 overall
cars). Also enjoyed the red/black '55 Healey 100m and the cream Morris
Traveler Woodie. 

Kudos to the Stoke Family Farm and to the RE Mini Association and all the
vendors. Good job!

Hello Members,

I think this subject has come up before, but I'm looking for a good shop 
to rebuild a Smiths dual temp/oil gauge. Nxxxxxxx'x in NY was a dead end 
- they gave me a bit of a brush off when I told them I just needed the 
capillary tube replaced and didn't want the entire gauge brought up to 
concours standards. The shop I won't name in the Peninsula took a very 
long to repair a gauge for me some years back and the repair didn't 
last. Has anyone used the few other shops that do this work, and can 
they please share their opinions? Andy - did you have all of your MGA 
gauges rebuilt, or are they new?

Hi Ron and Members,

Great reviews by Don, John and Brad have already provided. I agree that 
it was great venue, nice group of people; with it being in our own back 
yards (or front, for some people), this is a fun show that I hope 
continues. It was fun seeing John's TR250 with the Surrey top fully 
installed and the new dash - the car is really shaping up. I thought 
there would be more time to look at other cars and mingle, but there was 
a lot of interest in our Elan DHC and Sarto's Elan coupe, so it was 
actually hard to get away from that spot for very long, though it a lot 
of fun doing show and tell. Besides meeting a lot of nice new folks, I 
had a lot of fun hanging out with fellow members, mostly John, Walter 
and his wife Gwen, and Sarto, and meeting Brad.  It was also interesting 
to see how many local classic car owners, including a couple of Minis, 
are not members of NOBBCor active in our club.

I'm not a big show participant, since our cars aren't likely to win any 
awards, but love attending them, and always enjoy shows of an eclectic 
nature, which this was. Considering it was the first year, I suspect 
more NOBBC members will enter in the future, and I think it could grow 
to include even more European cars, which was the intent of the REME folks.

Ron - do you think we should update the web site to show the new meeting 
site at Bad Ass Coffee?

We had a fantastic time at the car show! Thank you all that attended and

96, unfortunately I lost about 15-20 photos due to the setting dial rotating
on the back of my camera, but I am sure someone will post additional
pictures of the cars that were left out in my album. We had an official
count of 110 registered cars, plus the parking area was full of British &
European cars that came just to view the cars and a few others tha parked in
the show that were not registered... so I am sure there were closer to 125
there most of the day.

I am unaware of anyone that was disappointed or upset that registered for
the show. There may have been a few grumblings that I am not aware of
regarding the number of MINIs in attendance, but it was Redwood Empire MINI
Enthusiasts that put on the show so registrants should have predicted that.
The winners were almost entirely non Mini-MINI cars, and some beautiful
vehicles were acknowledged. I for one voted for the Nash Healey and Brad's
3000. The Nash was beautifully restored and was a stunning car. There was an
Alfa Romeo parked behind the show that was a gorgeous car (but did not
enter).

There were gifts/door prizes awarded throughout the day (by drawing) and the
awards program started around 3:30pm. I think the single most enjoyable
moment was when the gentleman that had the pre-1960's VW convertible won an
award. I never saw such a smile on anyone's face!

my gauges. It wasn't a refacing or anything, but just a general cleaning and
rebuilding. Not cheap though. You're presumably referring to Palo Alto
Speedo on the Peninsula? (And by the way, are we worried about lawsuits or
something in re naming names? I sure hope not...) I was thinking of taking
my quartz conversion Imperial clock to them. But speaking of clocks, one
Mike Eck (http://www.jaguarclock.com/) did my Jaguar clock to somehow retain
the original, admittedly less-than-stellar time-keeping capabilities, but
also THAT WONDERFUL TICKING! I would recommend his process (which
incorporates an integrated circuit but retains all the original guts as
well) which he does I believe on any Smiths clock and perhaps others as
well. I would be interested in where you end up and how you fare.

Healey 3000. I am humbled by all the votes we received. The '54 Nash Healey
was exceptional (btw, for a 4-year marque... they only produced 504 overall
cars). Also enjoyed the red/black '55 Healey 100m and the cream Morris
Traveler Woodie. 

Kudos to the Stoke Family Farm and to the RE Mini Association and all the
vendors. Good job!

I've yet to go to the BCF as I monitor other lists, so thanks for the link. Awhile ago I read an account of how to do this using a donor gauge but the method for getting the ether and keeping it in the Bourdon tube and capillary tube was entirely unclear. I'll check this out.

We had a fantastic time at the car show! Thank you all that attended and

96, unfortunately I lost about 15-20 photos due to the setting dial rotating
on the back of my camera, but I am sure someone will post additional
pictures of the cars that were left out in my album. We had an official
count of 110 registered cars, plus the parking area was full of British &
European cars that came just to view the cars and a few others tha parked in
the show that were not registered... so I am sure there were closer to 125
there most of the day.

I am unaware of anyone that was disappointed or upset that registered for
the show. There may have been a few grumblings that I am not aware of
regarding the number of MINIs in attendance, but it was Redwood Empire MINI
Enthusiasts that put on the show so registrants should have predicted that.
The winners were almost entirely non Mini-MINI cars, and some beautiful
vehicles were acknowledged. I for one voted for the Nash Healey and Brad's
3000. The Nash was beautifully restored and was a stunning car. There was an
Alfa Romeo parked behind the show that was a gorgeous car (but did not
enter).

There were gifts/door prizes awarded throughout the day (by drawing) and the
awards program started around 3:30pm. I think the single most enjoyable
moment was when the gentleman that had the pre-1960's VW convertible won an
award. I never saw such a smile on anyone's face!

Hi Greg, my Jaeger water/temp was in the same condition as yours.  The face
was almost perfect, the oil pressure part worked but the water temp pigtail
was broken.  I had it exchanged for a reconditioned unit from Scarborough
Faire in Rhode Island that specializes in MGA parts.  They probably carry
the Smith's version as well.  It cost me $160 part exchange.  I don't know
anyone who just sells the pigtail because that's all I wanted myself and it
didn't seem that hard to fit one.  The person to talk to at Scarborough
Faire is Cecelia and if you have a conversation with her less than 5 minutes
you'll be doing well, her number is 888 647 2787 and she's a delightful and
very knowledgeable person.  

Also on the A the speedometer worked but the odometer was broken, I had that
repaired by Nisonger in NY.  Cost was $170.  I had my Smiths speedometer on
my MGB repaired by Nisonger again, cost was $170, plus the cost of a new
glass and bezel, for a total of $185.  Turn a round time with Nisonger is
about 3 to 4 weeks with 2 weeks being shipping to and from NY.  They do good
work and I know of other people who have had gauges repaired by them and
have been pleased.

Hi Greg,

I had my oil pressure gauge for my TR4 repaired at West Valley Instruments 
in Reseda, suggested to me by Moss Motors. He did it overnight for me, 
charged me $93.75 plus tax and freight.. It worked for two days, but my 
newly rebuilt motor was putting a consistant 100 PSI, when it should have 
been putting out about 60 PSI. Consequently, the gauge started leaking 
again. I adjusted the oil pressure down to 60-70 PSI, and re-repaired the 
gauge myself, and it has been working fine since. The gentleman's name is 
Morris, Tel 818-758-9500. I can't blame the failure of my gauge on him, with 
my oil pressure as high as it was, and he is referred by Moss, so who knows. 
You could check with Moss as to any complaints, and ask Morris about a 
warranty.

My experience with these repair services is as follows:

I had the Morgan's speedo repaired at Palo Alto Speedometer. After three
tries and $180. they couldn't get it right. I give them credit for  
trying everything
including a new cable. I don't know about divine intervention, but  
after about
six months the thing started working fine except it reads about five mph
fast and at a stop it still reads 5 mph. I guess it's really not  
fixed but at
least it doesn't have a 35 mph wave in the needle anymore.

My Morgan has a TR-3 engine. Factory manual states this engine's oil
pressure should read 70 psi @ 3000 rpm warm, so it would seem once
Mike adjusted his oil pressure where it should be all is right with
the world... Or at least the guage.

Regarding the Jaeger speedos, has anyone found a source for the little 
fiber gears that drive the odometer and trip odometer wheels. I've been 
searching for a source for 20 years and have never been able to find 
one. The speedo places wont sell them, just want to refurbish your unit. 
My speedo works great but the odometers don't, not a major problem but 
it would be nice to get them working again. I have lots of speedos I've 
scavanged parts from over the years but the fiber washers never seem to 
last. I guess they hit roughly 30-40 years and die ;-)

Ron, I tried to repair the odometer on my A before sending it to Nisonger.
The little plastic gears were broken and I had no way of fixing them.  I
must say that it works great now but $170 is not chump change.

Plastic? The gears I have look like they're made out of some kind of 
fiber composite. I thought of cutting two in half and glueing them 
together or using them as a mold but so far, I haven't gotten inspired. 
Somebody must sell them as I imagine many people are in the same boat 
I'm in. I've noticed that the gears strip when the speedo changes to an 
even thousand and have a few that are stopped at 49999 or thereabouts, 
maximum thrust needed on the gear at that point I imagine.

 I believe if you investigate, you'll find those original gears were made from
a composite material using manure from fine English shetland ponies combined
with a traditional British adhesive. You might want to contact the British
Adhesives and Sealants Association for more information.
  OK, I'm being a wise guy...but the association DOES exist!
   BTW, my old 62 Mini Cooper had a funny smell to it's interior that would
never go away. It took some getting used to.  I was told that it was the
adhesive (think horses and glue factory) that was used on the upholstery.

for less than or about equal to what you pay to have them rebuilt!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to John for reminding me of APT Instruments - I'd forgotten that 
they not only sell but repair gauges.

Wendell - they also carry magnolia-faced gauges, which are probably 
close or identical to cream color, if you have Smiths gauges.
I just got off the phone with Chuck, and he said they've been selling 
gauges all over the world because of the crappy dollar exchange rate, so 
their stock is low. England is on holiday much of August, so 
replenishments are a ways off, but they can make and repair gauges, and 
can swap dials and bezels as needed.

As John mentioned, it can be cheaper for new gauges (these Smiths are 
made under license by Smiths technicians) than some repairs; a dual oil 
temp guage costs $17 less than a repaired Bourdon tube on a customer's 
gauge, and has a 2 year warranty instead of a 1-year.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the tip on the magnolia faced guages. Perhaps at the next  
event
you can see what Morgan used. They are Smiths gauges but quite unique
to Morgan. For instance the 4 in 1 gauge that has oil press, water temp,
fuel, ammeter around a large face with the "Morgan" script in the  
center.
Some other Brit cars used a similar layout. Of course this company
offers repair service.

Hi Ron,

You're right! We've been in the field so much we both forgot about it. 
Unfortunately, we have to catch up on all the mundane things to get 
ready for another week of field work, so probably won't make the drive. 
Last night's weather forecast suggested slightly cooler temps, which

John, if the radiator places won't do a gas tank, you can take it to NorCal
stripping in Windsor.  They did the gas tank on my A Coupe and it really was
nasty.  You'll need to paint if afterwards because they strip it down to
bare metal in their acid baths.

They have a really cool rear suspension set up that I'd like to try. It replaces the transverse leaf spring with an upper arm and coil overs.
