I have a machinist that has done some work for me who might be willing to host a Saturday tech session in October or early November. His shop is located in Santa Rosa, and it is a very good one-man shop. He does more American and Japanese work than British, but he did a good job on my Lotus Twincam head, with my specs and guidance, as well as some other parts. Of particular interest at his shop is an air-centered floating-bed Serti head machine that handles very precise valve work and multiple-angle valve seat grinds, but he's got the usual assortment of gear as well. I'm still trying to see how interested the machinist is in this idea, so if members can give me feedback in the next week or so, I can judge whether to pursue the idea with him. Please respond to the list so everyone else can see the response. I'd also hope those attending would drive their Brit cars so we can make his eyes bug out. Just took the Elan to a big car parts chain after a young counter parts guy expressed complete lack of awareness of classic British cars, but wanted to learn more. Turns out he wasn't impressed, but the young assistant manager was! Got to hit these young enthusiasts, I believe. Because we would be supplying snacks, if not a complete lunch, there would be a minimal cost involved, which would depend on how many people attend. Figure on $4-5 each? I'll volunteer to get the food. I'd like to get at least 10 members to commit to this before lobbying my machinist any further, more would be better. A larger group would be better, because he is going to some extra effort to prepare several projects to show the machines in operation. It looks like you'll get to see a block being bored, valve seats being cut, and some other operations, which is actually more than I had hoped for. Originally when I broached the idea to him the plan didn't include actual machine work, since when he works, he has to do it right and get it out the door. Now it looks like he'll set up some exhibition projects for us. When he has figured out the projects and a schedule that works for him, I'll let you all know. It will be on a Saturday, probably in 2-3 weeks, in the afternoon (he has work during the morning). If we're lucky with the weather, we can schedule a short drive that ends up at his shop. I'll be picking up a simple mixed deli platter and fruit platter, and a couple of 6-packs of drinks. If you want beer, please bring it yourself. If you have special dietary needs, please bring what you wish to snack on. There will be a small cost associated with the tech session to pay for the food, so when I know the exact date and how many of us are attending, I'll tell you the actual cost (figure $5-7 each). If you won't be consuming any food or drink, let me know so I will buy less to keep costs down. If any other members are interested, please pipe up soon! Ron - can you please post this on the old email list? Starting with the obvious, was the easy-out you used high-quality, not a Chinese one? If not, try getting a really good US made tool. There are also a couple of profiles; square and reverse-twist. Try them both. One trick is to use a reverse-twist type with Locktite, get the tool to bite into the brass, and let it set up before trying to extract. Obviously, it would be a problem to try to drill or tap the brass, since shavings will enter the block. Also, don't apply any heat to the brass fitting - that will make it expand in the hole. You can, if you are careful (watch out for gas, oil, etc.), apply a bit of heat to the block about 1/2" around the fitting - that can help break loose the tight fit between the threads of the block and fitting. Don't overdo the heat. Good luck, Greg Tatarian rmossholder at comcast.net wrote: > Hello, > I seem to have screwed up. I can only add that I've use easy-outs before on far worse broken steel studs and they have worked. I reckon that you must have used a Taiwan or Chinese special if it sheared so easily. Buy a good one as Greg said with the left hand thread and try again. Gentle does it. I think I got mine from Sears Craftsman, but can't remember. I also don't know where it is now or else you could use it providing it was the correct size. The easy-out that sheered off in the fitting was a reverse thread screw type made by Black & Decker (probably a Chinese special). I also tried one of the spline types made by Snap-on. The Snap-on tool was not effective either. The brass would just chip away. I think my only option left will be to remove the distributor, drill out the fitting and re-tap the hole. Of course I will have to flush out the chips and give her an oil change, but I think that is going to be my best option. Any further ideas would be greatly appreciated. I didn't recommend the multi-spline type for the reason you noted - it acts as a reamer on the soft brass. If this were my problem, I would avoid drilling out the fitting, but would instead tap threads into it, thread a bolt with permanent locktite into the new hole in the brass fitting, and after it set up, try to extract it in that manner. Why would I not drill and tap? at least three reasons; 1) because drilling will create many small slivers of brass which will work directly into your oil galleries, while threading, because of the slower speed, might make control of the chips easier, 2) drilling squarely and concentrically is difficult, and you might bite to far into the iron, and 3), it would be best not to enlarge the hole in the block for the oil switch. In addition to your idea of removing the dizzy (presumably to vacuum out brass chips) I would also remove the oil pressure relief valve from directly beneath the oil switch hole, as well as the oil filter or filter adaptor. While tapping, I would have a shop vac nozzle mounted to the oil relief valve hole in an attempt to suck out chips, and I would use the vac to try to draw chips from the oil gallery hole in the filter boss. If this doesn't work, you can always fall back on your plan, but you may well find that you could drill the brass until it just gets thin, without touching the iron threads, and it will loosen up enough to allow it to be worked out with a dental tool or small pick. The good news is that the path the oil takes under pressure is from the pump, to the relief valve and oil switch, then to the oil filter, so it is possible the brass chips will be captured by the filter before being shot into your bearings at 70 psi., which would be a nice thing to avoid. Two weeks ago, only the horn did not work (it used to), but when I crossed two contacts on the horn relay, it sounds. I could not figure out how to get it to work at the steering wheel. Over the past two weeks I have driven it a few miles but one by one another electrical device does not work (a few go out at a time). First the wiper blades and the front side lights, then the brake lights, then dash lights, license plate lights, turn signals. I checked to see that the fuses worked on the bench. This weekend I unscrewed each fuse screw, cleaned and reset each wire (about 20). Now only the headlights, tail lights and truck light work. Otherwise, the car runs great! There must be something basic that I do not understand, like a regulator or something that has gone out. Perhaps the positive ground is not connecting to the fuse boxes? How do I test? Any thoughts would be most helpful. If I can do it, I won't have to bring it in to a mechanic. I expect that we'll be there for 2 hours, but it may run longer for those who have the time. PLEASE RESPOND TO ME BY OCTOBER 21 TO CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE. I need to know the number of members attending so I can purchase the correct amount of food and refreshments. Cost: Nominal - should be $4-6 maximum, which will just cover food, refreshments, and some beer for Jerry. I was originally going to extend this invitation to the Alfa and Lotus clubs, but decided to keep it local and in the NOBBC family, so let's put in a good showing! I liked the previous body style (Silver Shadow) more, however with the Spirit Rolls introduced some nice upgrades like a Bosch electrical system (sorry Lucas), fuel injection, and mongo brakes. All of which outweighed the other considerations. I bought it the week my stock portfolio declined 20%. Don't panic, they said, so I didn't, and went ahead with the purchase! I had a 1966 Triumph spitfire back then and restored a 1970 spitfire 6 years ago. Sold it for a 1966 Lotus Elan coupe and will drive it to the meeting. I'll post some pictures of both and a tool that I have invented, that eliminates beating the spinners with a hammer and you will know how much torque you have just applied. Which protects the Hub and splines from over tightening. You just need a torque wrench or a breaker bar and a 1 inch socket. British European Motors uses my tool. They claim that they never use a hammer on new wheels and spinners and never over torque the wheels. They claim that they never use a hammer on new wheels and spinners and never over torque the wheels. > > Sarto from Cotati > > > --- On Mon, 10/20/08, gtwincams wrote: > > >>From: gtwincams >>Subject: Re: [Nobbc] Tech Session is Scheduled >>To: "North Bay British Car Club" >>Date: Monday, October 20, 2008, 1:39 PM >>Hi Gene, >>It's not too late for anyone to attend, even if they >>want to just show >>up on the day. This is basically the same engine as yours. About 10 yrs ago another Jaguar shop quoted me $6K to do the entire job. The guy broke it down to 2K for labor, 2K for parts, and 2K for machine shop work. I ended up doing it myself over a 6 month period. To answer your question, I think you will pay at least 4K to re ring what you spoke of. But then again, how is the crank, bearings, seals, dizzy and all the other peripherals that are hard to get to except when the engine is out? Your bill could easily double or triple if you want someone to do it all. Your big Jag motor could run that much as well if you want it really sorted. On the other hand, it might only need rings, a bore hone, some valve work, and off you go. If it needs a clutch disk, you should also change the clutch pressure plate. At the same time, you must have the flywheel surfaced. New bolts should be used, as well as a new pilot bushing/bearing installed. You know how it goes - each job can lead to another because no one ever really knows what needs to be done with a motor until it is stripped down. In my experience, if a mechanic gives you a fixed price or a narrow price range, they will only be able to stick to that if they don't take care of problems they find while it's apart but which they didn't anticipate in the cost. They can certainly work to a budget however; many will source used parts from their own stock if they will work, or they will minimize the machine work, new parts, etc. with the customer's understanding that they aren't getting the Full Monty. Nevertheless, you should be prepared for a somewhat hefty sum - there aren't THAT many qualified Jag mechanics (though probably more than Lotus mechanics), so it will pay to shop around. Figure on a few thou. to be sure. Cheers, Greg Tatarian Charlie Saul wrote: > Hi Folks, > > I have a '52 Jag XK120. The mechanic says that the rings are smoking and > the compression is low. If you are not troubled with not having the original engine in the car that may be a good start. Else wise depends on whether you are willing to get the block out and back into of the car yourself rather than paying for that extensive labor. Good thing is, everything you will need is available. I'd peruse the Monster List http://www.dimebank.com/monster/ and shop around for the best price on parts. Plan on pistons, rings, bearings, seals, oil pump, gaskets all around, As long as you're that far along I'd go for a valve job, and to replace all clutch components while you've got the whole kit and caboodle out of the car. Driver or show car you don't want to risk having to be going back in after finding some other drive train component has failed and you have to pull the whole damn thing again. You could maybe even buy my car! I think the SIII 4.2 engine would drop right in with out much notice after you installed your intake, valve covers, and porcelain exhaust manifolds. I entirely rebuilt my engine my self about 110K miles ago. Even replaced the bronze dizzy drive gear ($90). Engine now has about 2K miles on a valve adjustment and preemptive head gasket replacement. Has 150-155 PSI cranking numbers, 215-20 psi oil pressure hot at idle with 10-40 oil and better with 20-50 oil. Minimal leaking. Car just passed smog but still only worth a $2-3K. Or you could locate another car like mine. Just thinking.... Ron previously suggested meeting for a drive at the our regular spot (commuter lot west of Hwy. 101 off the River Road exit) at 12 noon instead of 10, and that is what I've told a few people who have emailed me directly, so may I suggest you take Ron up on that suggestion? If you won't be going on the drive, or if the drive is on Sunday, please do bring your British car to the shop. I'll be getting snacks and preparing with Jerry, so won't join you for a drive. Please direct all questions to me. Date and Time: Saturday, Oct. 25, 2pm Basic Agenda: Meet at the shop at 2pm. Snacks and some soft drinks will be set out for you. Any special dietary or liquid refreshments you need, please supply your own. Jerry will give us a sequential tour of the shop, with a few examples of machine work in progress on various equipment. We'll probably see the block boring machine in action, the Serti valve seat and guide cutter (very accurate, very cool), and other interesting operations. Questions are welcome. I would like to have an idea of the actual number of members attending so I can purchase the correct amount of food and refreshments, but if you want to just show up, please feel free to do so. Cost: Nominal - should be $4-6 maximum, which will just cover food, refreshments, and some beer for Jerry. I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday at JNW Machine. You could speak to Mark Singleton to get an idea, but I know it will be expensive. They do GREAT work but it does get expensive and you need to be clear about what you want done and be prepared for cost escalation as you go...as others have noted... "it's always something"!! As Greg points out life is short. In these times of insecurity and fear it is essential that we all take time every day to count our blessings. I have a daily habit of looking around my world in the morning and looking for something special to be thankful for, then heading off to the chores of the day with a smile on my face not only for myself but also for the people I work with play with and love. Today I give thanks for having known the ever unique and off beat Steve. As Ron states we would not be here sharing our love of all things British car related without his unrelenting insistence that NOBBC be dues free, meetings free; just a gathering of equals in strange old cars. The pleasure after all is in the ride and the great joy in the company of like minded and ever hopeful LBC enthusiasts sharing together the love of (and frustration with) our individual breeds of problem child vehicles. Steve, eccentric that he was and like the car he owned fits into the mold of all of who find freedom on the open road. A Toast To Steve!!! May the road rise up to meet him!! Happy motoring pal.
