Has the anniversary of the NOBBC founding come and gone or is it this month? Some alert founding member I am. If I haven't missed and even if I have may I offer a celebration at my house after our Saturday ride this coming weekend. Make it a close in one so I can get home and get the tri-tips ready. I'll supply a couple of cases of beer and the tri tips. The rest is pot luck for attendees. I have a big back yard with plenty of space, hammocks lounges and a small pool. If it's too short a notice I can also manage this on the August Sunday ride. Let me know! As in years past, we will celebrate with a picnic at Fisk Mill Cove (northern part of Salt Point State Park). We will meet in the parking lot of the fish hatchery at Warm Springs Dam at 10:30 Saturday (8/11). The Mendocino club (NCBCC) has been invited to join us but I haven't heard back from them. Hopefully, we will leave the hatchery at 10:45 for a run out Skagg Springs Rd., then south on 1 to Fisk Mill Cove for a picnic. It would be a good idea to bring a prepared lunch as there is only one store on the way. The Dry Creek Store has great sandwiches and is on the way to the Dam. We can return via Hwy 1 or King Ridge Rd., dealers choice! This would be a great time to step up with a ride idea and take charge of it. Our next ride is scheduled for Sunday 8/26. Also both rides in September, So don't feel bashful about tossing any suggestions out to the list, if something gels, I'll send it out to those not on the list. I got an email from Joel and Pam of the Mendocino club NCBCC. They were on vacation and weren't able to post my notice about our anniversary ride, explains why none of the showed up. Just a quick note about Sunday's drive for those who would like a vicarious experience. It was a small group - Marla and Andy, Walter, who didn't go with us but met up to chat, Dennis and Cheryl, John Kenner in his Europa (buy it now while it's cheap), and Trish and our friend Jane in the TR6, and me in the Elan. Looks like everyone else was still recovering after the anniversary drive! We chatted for about 1/2 hour, then headed off, with Trish and Jane leading the group. The group was small, but the drive was quite nice - we went River Rd. to Mirabel, to 116, to Occidental Rd. into Occidental where we stopped for sandwiches. As it usually seems to happen in Occidental, we had a number of car admirers. One couple who had owned a Lotus Eclat in the past admired our Elan and John's Europa and pumped us for information. Seems he got the spark to buy another Lotus after seeing ours! We also picked up a stray car lover - a driver in a tricked out Datsun 510 was heading out of town when we arrived, and by the time we had all gotten our food to go and were leaving the parking lot, he snuck in behind and followed the group. From there, we took Coleman Valley Road, which was getting pretty darned foggy, prompting some of us (those with them still attached), to use their windshield wipers. Guess I should put them on for drives to the coast in the future... Coming down Coleman Valley Road (always a scenic treat), we cruised up to Goat Rock. Instead of driving the dirt road all the way to the lower parking lot, we stopped at the upper lot overlooking the beach and Goat Rock, met our stowaway, admired his 510, had lunch, and chatted some more. The sun was out, the fog gone, and the view was beautiful. We drove back by River Road, and then split up from there. It never seems to fail - when we get our cars out in public, stopped long enough for them to see, they invariably want to talk to us about them and either ask what they are, or reminisce about the MG or Triumph that they had in their youth. (Insert personal rant here...) Public interest is what keeps these cars alive, especially as current owners age or drop out of the sport. I think we all would love to see these cars around for a long time, and getting more people interested in them is a key to that. Also, the more public support we have, the more likely we'll be able to stave off more onerous laws affecting collector cars, like the recent bill requiring stringent annual smog checks of cars from 1976 onward (instead of biennial). I think we as a club might want to give some more thought to choosing more destinations or starting points that are visible to the public. Gives us a chance to have a mini car show without all the organizing, judging, etc., and we'll meet new folks. To that end, I propose that we pick a day to meet at the Round Table Pizza on Occidental Road in Santa Rosa. Suggestions for other locations are welcome, however this place has a great parking lot with shade that is visible from the freeway and Occidental Road, the restaurant does really good business, and there are three meeting rooms, so we could reserve one and get together for a pizza while giving time for the public to admire the cars. Since I'm bringing up ideas, Cheryl and I thought that it would be nice to select a Marin County starting point for one of the drives in an effort to entice our southern members to join up. When we did this some time ago, we succeeded in getting several drivers and cars we either hadn't met, or hadn't seen for awhile. It also gives us a change of pace, and although there might not be as many tight curvy roads, there are some beautiful drives and destinations. What do y'all think? (also therse some brit. cars in that club) e.s.c.a now has a website- should not be hard to find it. by now nobbc w/100 plus heads should be able to "pop-off" a big brit car event-say all of nor-cal. this is something i was trying working on and the spot was calaveras county fairgrounds-(angels camp-sonora area,) e-z folks to work with and the carpet was laid for a resonable rate-fairgrounds use-inshurence the hole 9 yards- the chamber of commerce ect. they want people there, and will help you do it. it,s not that difficult if i could do it right? we just did not have the headcount then. this would have been abought 4 years ago by now. as i always preach (and always will) the reason nobbc works like it does is because it,s dues free , there are no governing bodys, dont forget this, any brit. car is WELCOME- regardless if it,s a show winner or a old beater. we take in the whole realm- from a kid with an old mini to a well to due person w/a rolls royce- nobody at nobbc will look down there nose apon anybody elese due to there financhial portfolio. a tent in lake county is as good as a tiboron manshion. i hope this is the nobbc credo. (as long as the guy is decent) anyhoot clan-there colorado steve,s thoughts. the tr4-a should be denver conclave ready by friday- the car will also be in the windsor colorado labor day parade. (representing union labor-sheet metal workers) o.k. im out, need to get my lawnmower out of the rain. The goal I have here is to make it easier for Marin members to join up for a drive, but also select an area with good roads, such as you suggest. Mill Valley is just too congested with traffic for my tastes. We lived in Sausalito for 9 years, and I'm quite familiar with traffic along the towns of the 101 corridor, and congestion in the small Marin towns to the west. Do you have any specific suggestions for a meeting place in Novato with ample parking, good visibility, and easy access John, or any one else? Regarding the pizza shop in Santa Rosa I recommended earlier for a show and shine - they have a great salad bar for those like me who avoid the pizza. If you have an alternative restaurant with ample parking, good visibility, and easy access without tons of traffic, that would be just as good. The idea I had was more about the public being able to see the cars, more than where we eat. So with those parameters, any particular suggestions?
