Hope someone might be able to help with a problem which has stumped me. My 1970 Plus 8 starts and runs (and stops!) fine for about twenty to twenty five minutes. Then the engine starts to run rough and within a minute or two comes to a complete stop. If I am prepared to wait about fifteen minutes it will again start and run fine for another twenty to twenty five minutes and then stall again. This is not a very efficient way to get from point A to point B so I seek the collective wisdom with suggestions of what to check and what to do. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, comments, thoughts no matter how simple or complicated. If you need specific information about anything please just ask. Thanks for reading and thinking. Bob, I haven't worked on a +8. Is yours a gas or propaine powerd car? Is it carbed or Fuel injection? Do you have an electric fuel pump? What is the temp like when this is happening? What about humidity? My 84 Accord would get carb iceing on cold damp days and act like that. I guess I should start by asking has anything been done to the car reciently? If not, and this problem has just started, then I think it is fuel and not electrical. Since it doesn't just cut off, like someone turned off the ignition switch, I'd start with the assumption that it is fuel and not electrical in nature. If you have a gas powered car, my thoughts would first go to fuel supply. You could have junk in your gas tank that after getting stirred up cloogs the pick up. Then when you sit for 20 minutes, it settles out. Then start run, clog, die. and repeat. Next could be a bad fuel pump. Finally, if you have carbs, have you cleaned out the float bowl? You could have junk in there clogging the fuel port which settles out after you sit for a while. Do you have fuel filter? When is the last time you changed it? Some of the electrical possitilities are: Try replacing your coil. How hot is it when the car dies? Have you changed it reciently? Did you use a ballasted coil or not? Was the original coil ballasted? Does your car have an ignition module? That could be over heating and crapping out. John John T. Blair WA4OHZ email: jblair1948 at cox.net Va. But it's very easy to test a bad coil. You put a known good one on in its place. Do a test drive and see what happens. Other problems are more elaborate to diagnose. Chas, I've never had a coil fail like that, but I have heard of it happening quite often. That an old coil can fail when it get hot as you say. So glad you chimed in. I also should have suggested Bob that he take someone with him on a rid, or have a car chase him until the Morgan fails. Then he can do some very elementary trouble shooting. Take a couple of tools with him: a phillips screw head driver, and a can of start fluid, and possibly a bottle of water and a rag. When the car quits, he should run the following test to determine if it's fuel or electrical: 1. He should pull a spark plug wire from a spark plug, stick the phillips head screwdriver in the plug wire. Have his companion try and start the car. While the car is cranking, hold the shaft of the screwdriver about 1/8" away from a good metal ground (like the head, or a bolt) and see if he has spark. If so, it's not electrical. 2. If no spark try wetting the rag and placing it on the coil to cool it of. Remove and repeat a few times. Then try and start the car. If it starts, then it's probably the coil. 3. Spray some starting fluid into the carb. and try to start it. If she fires for a few seconds and dies, then the problem is fuel. Bob, I hope this helps. John John T.
