[Mini] Play in splines on quick release steering wheel

Howdy!

#9 is fitted with a quick release steering wheel like one of these

It is being a right pain as there is some side to side play between the
wheel and the column within the quick release mechanism, the wheel is very
solidly connected to the boss.... this is an MOT fail!

Any thoughts about how to take up this play? I was going to drill a hole
though the mechanism and the column to fit  spring steel drift pin but it
would not be an easy job as the ring you pull towards the wheel to release
it shrouds the result of the mechanism
