I had this happen when I first built my car (Mini Marcos). I'd used a 
non-vented filler cap on a van tank. I don't think any van/estate 
tanks have vent pipes. If this is the case you'll notice an inrush of 
air when you undo the filler cap after the car appears to run out of 
fuel. If you're only doing short journeys the air will leak in but on 
a longer trip a vacuum will build up in the tank.
