show where it is pointing, but the measurement area is much wider than that as
the sensed area is cone-shaped i.e. it gets wider the further out you go in some
case by as much as 2:1. The smaller the physical object that you want to
measure the closer you have to be or it averages cooler areas around it.
Yes I know an engine is pretty big, but it isn't all at the same
temperature. For the thermostat elbow for example it has to be almost

various areas over the surface of the rad will show up problems with flow
rate, partially blocked core where the cause is insufficient cooling, or that
