But synthetic vs non-synthetic is not the critical factor (depending on the history of your engine). The important thing is that it provide sufficient zinc and phosphorus (AKA ZDDP) to protect the lifters/tappets/cam followers in pre-smog-era MGs. All modern oils designed for use with catalytic converters do not provide adequate ZDDP (it clogs converters).
