Ah, the old "splash lubrication" theory. This was the basis for
the the idea that you would damage your gearbox if you towed the car
any distance with the rear wheels on the ground. I often wondered
if the proponents of this theory thought that the oil "splashed" all
the way back to the tailshaft bearing in the non-OD gearbox. Nope,
there are passages to send oil back there and return it. Anyway I
towed my '69 MGB non-OD behind my motor home all the way from south
TX to New England and back with all 4 wheels on the ground, the
driveshaft connected and the gearbox in neutral with no ensuing
problem. Funny how these myths take on a life of their own.

Anyway, backing up a paragraph or two, to my mind there is
a significant difference between the standard transmission,
which uses oil for splash lubrication only, and the OD
transmission, which uses oil as hydraulic fluid with a
planetary gearset, much like an automatic transmission.
Automatic transmissions are extremely sensitive to viscosity —
I don't think you would have much luck with 90W gear oil in an
auto trans.
