I'm amazed Leno as a car buff didn't already know that.

Many 'authorities' advise that a tyre should be examined closely at 5 
years and replaced when it reaches 10 years old irrespective of wear.  
This tyre was 12 years old but had only done 18k. Certainly not mileage 
expired and if just 2 years over the 'recommended' change point is 
enough to cause this then I suggest it was either faulty or they are 
just not made to the standards they used to be.  Falken Sincera.
