Why not replacing the sender unit? This job is not difficult. That is the most probable cause of the problem. Afterwards it is needed to calibrate the gauge again. I used the Haynes manual for how to do that. An alternative methos is filling the tank entirely and drive for 200 miles for the next fill. Tank filler neck is curved and of large diameter. My calibration efforts, that have worked out well, were to carry a spare can of fuel along, then running the tank dry, and noting gauge position. Then, fill to top and note again. Rick Astley?s book describes calibration of the gauge, but even when adjusted it can not be considered a precise instrument. Even though I now trust my gauge, I reset the trip odometer to 000 then plan to fill when it nears 225 miles. Trust but verify, as someone famous said. Just eyeball the depth of the damp area. Your big problem is that the ?stick? needs to be flexible to have any hope of bottoming out, given the bend in the filler neck. For instance, a strip of lath. Just hope it doesn?t break off in the tank. I have cut a strip of corrugated cardboard for this purpose. Single use only, and then you have to safely dispose of a gasoline-soaked piece of cardboard... Seriously, I don?t understand going to great lengths to avoid fixing something that is easily fixed. I am never satisfied unless every component of my MG is functioning as intended. The result is that the gauge markings are *about* right, although both of mine drop rather suddenly towards one quarter shortly after they have passed half. There were two tank necks, it is possible that one doesn't allow a straight dipstick, but you could still use a weight on non absorbent string to get an approximate depth for the purposes of seeing whether the gauge is way out or not,? which was the object of the exercise as far as I can remember. The gauge is only a reminder that it might be time to fill up on a long run - it's not like a temp or oil gauge which might exhibit a sudden change and be a harbinger of bad news - and each time you do it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to compare what the gauge said when you stopped and if you brim it how much fuel went in. Changing the sender willy-nilly when you have now idea what is wrong, or indeed if anything *is* wrong, does not appeal to me at all. PaulH.
