  Something I did not mention before was that, at 3000 RPM in the driveway, both SU carb pistons flutter rapidly up and down.  Might this suggest a sticking valve or two? The car is fresh out of winter storage.
  Shafts are snug, fortunately, and they pass the propane (Bernz-torch) test.   Inspired by Barney Gaylord’s discussions on SU rebuilding, I got the reamer he suggested and did a couple for another very-worn car, using bushings and new standard-size shafts.   Performance improvement was astounding. Owner reported that he could climb hills easily in fourth speed, hills that he had before struggled with in third.
