Mine had EP 90 when I bought it (1984) and it shifted horribly – part of the reason the price was so reasonable, PO thought the gearbox was bad. Switched to engine oil and has shifted well ever since.

This BL Technical Service Bulletin dated April 1975 states that EP 90 gear oil has superseded engine oil. i.e. previously the recommendation was for engine oil.  There are unverified statements that this was later rescinded.

I believe it is only the later model MGs that have this particular recommendation (20W50) in the drivers handbook.
